Exciting bike tours along the Berlin Wall Cycle Path

Discover the Berlin Wall Cycle Path

Berlin was divided for a long time – into West and East, into the territory of the Federal Republic of Germany and that of the GDR. The traces of the division are still visible today. Not only in the form of the colossal Berlin Wall, but also the architecture of the residential and commercial buildings, cultural places and last but not least the mentality of the locals are witnesses to the moving history of the city. During a bike tour on the Berlin Wall Cycle Path, cyclists get a wonderful insight and overview of the completely different lives of the two parts of the city - and their residents.

The route of the Berlin Wall Cycle Path (click here for the Map) runs for around 160 km along the former GDR border installations. Cyclists mostly ride on the former customs route - here waren the western border guards on the move - and on the former patrol route on the other side. Thanks to numerous sections of the wall that are still in place, regular overview maps along the way and continuous signage, the route is also suitable for less experienced cyclists without restrictions.

Especially nice: There are over 40 information points along the Berlin Wall Cycle Path, which provide detailed information about the division of Germany, the construction of the Wall, human tragedies and of course the fall of the Wall in 1989. The cycle tour on the Wall Cycle Path becomes a varied journey through time and brings the recent history of the city of Berlin to life.

The Berlin Wall Cycle Path leads completely around the former West Berlin. The themed cycle path not only runs through the urban jungle, but also makes a detour into the Berlin area.

Next to the Berlin Wall, cycle tourists experience something like this Village of Lübars, which is the only surviving village that still belongs to the Berlin urban area. Also on the former Sonnenallee border crossing the Berlin Wall Cycle Path takes you past. You continue through residential areas until you finally approach Berlin-Schoenefeld Airport from the north.

The company emerged from Bergmann Electricitäts-Werke Aktien-Gesellschaft, which was founded by Sigmund Bergmann in 1891 and was dedicated, among other things, to the electrical equipment of trams and interurban trains.

The Bornholmer Straße border crossing was the northernmost of the 7 inner-city through routes. In 1989, the first GDR citizens were able to emigrate to West Berlin here.

On the former border strip there is now a 1,4 km long memorial with a visitor center on Bernauer Strasse.

An area in Berlin-Mitte where the main German executive and legislative institutions are based. Among other things: Reichstag building and Chancellery.

The Brandenburg Gate was built in 1793 by Johann Gottfried Schadow. Today it is Berlin's landmark and since 1990 a symbol of German reunification.

Digression on history: About the Berlin Wall

It was a mild summer night. On the evening of August 12, 1961, border police officers from the GDR began tearing up the streets and erecting barricades on the inner-city borders of both parts of the occupation. Only a few months later, the barbed wire obstacles at the beginning became meter-high walls separating West and East Berlin. The building of the Berlin Wall was initiated by the GDR's top leadership, who wanted to prevent their citizens from leaving the country unwantedly.

Countless tragedies occurred as a result of the building of the Wall. Although the Wall was considered impregnable, not least because of the intensive and aggressive protection it was being guarded by the GDR border police, many people tried to flee. At least 140 people died alone on the death strip of the Berlin Wall - along the entire inner-German border waren it thousands.

In the fall of 1989, the GDR population mobilized against the regime. On November 9th of that year, a crowd of people stormed the Wall shortly after new exit regulations had been announced. The way to West Berlin was free again.

Perfect bike tour for families with children or for seniors

More shops, doctors and experiences along the way are hardly possible on a long-distance cycle path. The infrastructure of the Wall Cycle Path is almost perfect. In combination with cycle paths that are always paved and a flat topography, the Berlin cycle path becomes the ideal cycle tour route for families with children or for seniors.

City and country: both included

Within the center of Berlin, the Wall Cycle Path has an urban character. This is initially the case on the section from Berlin-Mitte to Schönefeld. However, allotment colonies that appear more rural are also cycled through. From Schönefeld to Potsdam, the cycle path takes holidaymakers along the city limits and thus through less built-up areas. Poplar avenues, country lanes with a view of the Brandenburg area and the backdrop of houses in the outskirts of Berlin characterize the picture. Wald is cycled through on the Königsweg to Potsdam. From Kladow near Potsdam to Hohen Neuendorf, suburban, city and thoroughly rural border routes alternate. Here West Berlin is only occasionally perceived through forest and hedges. In the north it goes through pine forest. The last rural section with a village character is on the Tegeler Fliess.

Then it's back to the hustle and bustle of the city. Between the districts of Pankow and Wedding, the route leads partly along the S-Bahn lines back to Berlin-Mitte. Mauerpark, Bernauer Strasse, Humboldt University, Charité and the banks of the Spree are the last landmarks on the Berlin Wall Cycle Path before the Brandenburg Gate comes into view.
