Along the Altmühl Cycle Path you will find countless highlights and sights . Especially in the towns and villages, true treasures abound – both natural and handcrafted.

Medieval Rothenburg ob der Tauber

Rothenburg ob der Tauber is considered the quintessential medieval town in Germany. At the start of your cycling tour through the Altmühl Valley, immerse yourself in this enchanting world of half-timbered houses, city walls and gates, battlements, and old, cobblestone streets. From the town hall tower, you'll enjoy a fantastic panoramic view of the town and the surrounding countryside.

Treuchtlingen and the Altmühltherme

In Treuchtlingen, the healing, mineral-rich Jurassic spring water bubbles to the surface. The Altmühltherme spa there offers the opportunity to strengthen your health and simply relax in this recognized healing water. Very close to the town lies the " Fossa Carolina ," also known as the " Karlsgraben " (Charlemagne's Canal). As early as the time of Charlemagne, attempts were made to construct a canal to connect shipping traffic between the Rhine and Danube rivers. Today, an exhibition documents and presents interesting information about that era and the canal's construction.

The baroque town of Eichstätt

The episcopal city of Eichstätt is a centuries-old bishopric and impresses visitors with its numerous monasteries and churches. Against an impressive Baroque backdrop, you'll find inviting restaurants and cafés during leisurely strolls through the city, while the diverse museums tell the story of the city and region . The exhibits even extend back to the earliest geological eras. The city also serves as the central administrative center for the Altmühl Valley.

Beilngries: the city on Main-Danube Canal

The officially recognized resort town of Beilngries attracts tourists with its historic old town and wide range of churches, museums, and other activities. The Altmühl and Sulz rivers converge in Beilngries. Take advantage of your stay and visit the beautiful Hirschberg Castle, the former bishop's residence, with its fantastic views of the surrounding landscape and the town of Beilngries.

Our tip : The Altmühltal Dinosaur Museum is nearby . You can quickly travel back in time to the era of giant reptiles by bicycle!

Kelheim at the Danube Gorge

Whether medieval city gates, chapels, or church ruins : Kelheim on the Danube Gorge has a lot to offer! A visit to the Liberation Hall , a memorial to the victorious battles against Napoleon, should definitely be at the top of your list. A trip to the Weltenburg Gorge , the Danube Gorge, is also highly recommended. This unique natural spectacle is Bavaria's first National Natural Monument . No wonder, as the Danube winds its way between 70-meter-high limestone cliffs – simply breathtaking!

Regensburg: Middle Ages on the Danube

Regensburg is a must-see on your cycling tour through the Altmühl Valley. Although the Altmühl Cycle Path ends in Kelheim, visiting Regensburg is an absolute dream ! Stroll across one of the city's landmarks, the 310-meter-long Stone Bridge , into the perfectly preserved historic old town and soak up the medieval atmosphere. Regensburg Cathedral , along with Cologne Cathedral, is one of the most important Gothic cathedrals in Germany. We also highly recommend it!
