Across the Alps to the Adriatic Sea in a week – that sounds like hard work! It's not quite as strenuous if you choose the Alpe-Adria cycle path. Here, the crossing of the Alps is also feasible for pleasure cyclists, because the ascent to the main ridge of the Alps is divided into two daily stages, the last section is crossed by train. On the journey you will pass the idyllic Salzach Valley, Bad Gastein, the impressive high mountain landscape of the Hohe Tauern, the sunny Dravatal and the wildly rugged Kanaltal. On the Via Julia Augusta you cycle comfortably via Palmanova and Aquileia into the lagoon of Grado.

Bike tour map Alpe Adria

Individual arrival at the starting hotel in Salzburg. A cycle tour could not start more impressively than in the Mozart city of Salzburg. One baroque highlight follows the next in the beautiful old town. Take some Mozart balls with you on the trip to the sea.

Overnight place: Salzburg

You leave the city with a view of the Hohensalzburg Fortress. The mountains are already visible in the distance. The first section takes you along the Salzach. On the way you pass the former summer residence of the Salzburg prince bishops, Hellbrunn Palace. The extraordinary water features have been delighting young and old for more than 400 years. On the Tauern cycle path, the journey continues towards Hallein, known for its crooked town houses and above all for the white gold - the salt. Another highlight is the waterfall in Golling.

Overnight place: St. Johann/Bischofshofen

The journey continues through the tranquil Gastein Valley. Until the 20th century it was only accessible via mountain paths and narrow roads. Framed by the peaks of the Hohe Tauern, you cycle along the Gasteiner Ache. Passing Dorfgastein and Bad Hofgastein you reach the well-known health resort of Bad Gastein. The “Monte Carlo of the Alps”, as the place is often called, is known for its many magnificent hotels from the “Bel Epouque” period, which shape the townscape. The main attraction is the Gastein waterfall, which is fed by a total of 17 springs.

Overnight place: Mölltal

In Böckstein you board the train to go through the Tauern lock to Mallnitz. Today you cycle along the River Möll through the impressive high mountain landscape. This section of the cycle path is also known as the Glockner cycle path. It mostly goes slightly downhill and leads through the Hohe Tauern National Park. From there the Drava cycle path leads to Spittal with its famous Renaissance castle Porcia. The stage ends in Carinthia's second largest city. Villach is not only known for its carnival, but also for its church festival. There are also numerous sights waiting for you. If you still have enough time, we recommend a swim in one of the lakes around the city.

Overnight place: Villach

Following the River Gail, you'll leave Villach behind and you'll soon be saying goodbye to Austria and hello to Italy. The canal valley extends in the border triangle of Italy, Austria and Slovenia, the center of which is the Italian border town of Tarvisio. Austrians, Slovenes, Friulians and Italians have lived together here for centuries, because all three major European language families - Germanic, Romanic and Slavic - meet here directly. Further through the Kanaltal you can admire the beauties of the Friulian alpine region with an intact, untouched nature and extensive forests from the saddle. If you want, you can take the train (ticket not included) to Tarvisio or Ugovizza, shortening part of the route.

Overnight place: Venzone and surroundings

Located at the southern exit of the Canal Valley and at the foothills of the Julian Alps, the town of Gemona del Friuli is considered one of the most beautiful historic towns in Friuli-Venezia Giulia. The townscape is characterized by the majestic Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, which is certainly worth a visit. The wine determines today's stage. Hills full of vines line your way and invite you to taste one or the other drop. Shaped by Venetian influences, Udine radiates calm and prudence; You can admire important late Gothic and Renaissance buildings over a coffee in the “Piazza” or while strolling through the city centre.

Overnight place: Udine

Accompanied by the breeze of the Scirocco, you glide past reed landscapes and water channels and reach Grado, a historic fishing town and one of the most popular bathing resorts on the Adriatic. On the way, the UNESCO World Heritage, the city of Palmanova and the extensive archaeological sites of the ancient city of Aquileia await your visit.

Overnight place: Bachelor's Degree
