Alpe-Adria Cycle Route II for Families, Villach

From Austria's sunniest province, along the southern side of the Alps to the sea, this family cycling tour takes you to breathtaking natural spectacles, cultural diversity, and culinary delights. Sample Carinthian cheese noodles, marvel at the peaks of the Carnic Alps, treat yourself to creamy gelato in a piazza in Udine, and finally reward yourself with a refreshing dip in the Adriatic Sea. There's plenty for the whole family to discover on the second part of the Alpe-Adria Cycle Path, from Villach to Grado.

The stillness of the mountains, the gentle shores of the crystal-clear lakes, pure nature - located in the heart of Carinthia, Villach reflects this entire diversity.

The route initially follows the Drava River for a while. But soon the cycle path leads you along the Gail River towards Italy. "Servus Austria – Ciao Italia" is the greeting you'll hear at the border. In Tarvisio, you'll even be greeted in three languages, as Austrians, Slovenes, and Italians have lived together here for centuries.

The cycle path in Italy is also excellent, allowing you to cycle comfortably downhill along a former railway line through the Canal Valley, admiring the beauty of the Friulian Alps from the saddle. From Pontebba, the train takes you to Udine (boarding later is also possible). Once in the city, you can experience "dolce vita" with an Italian gelato in the piazza or while strolling through the narrow streets.

After taking in the many impressions of the large city, you leave Udine heading south along the ancient Roman road, the Via Claudia Augusta. Cycling through the expansive Friulian countryside, you pass through small villages typical of the region, until you reach the old, star-shaped fortress city of Palmanova with its enormous Piazza Grande.

A warm Scirocco breeze caresses your face! You travel through vast reed beds and along small canals towards the Gulf of Venice. You should definitely plan a stop in the Roman city of Aquileia, the so-called "Second Rome," before reaching your final destination: Grado, one of the most popular seaside resorts on the Adriatic coast. Its expansive sandy beach is sure to delight not only your children.

This leisurely bike tour takes you through the Grado Lagoon. A multitude of canals and streams crisscross this unique landscape. The lush flora and fauna are bathed in a very special light, changing color several times a day. A perfect end to a wonderful cycling trip.
