Much like iron was transported in the 15th century, today you follow the course of the Tagliamento until you turn off in the direction of Udine just after Gemona. But before you do that, give yourself a break in Gemona, considered one of the most beautiful historical sites in Friuli Venezia Giulia. Admire the stunning facade of the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and stroll through the narrow streets of the old town. In 1976 Friuli was hit by a severe earthquake measuring 6,5 on the Richter scale, the epicenter of which was near Gemona. Gemona and the neighboring municipalities of Venzone and Osoppo were severely damaged. The right aisle and the campanile collapsed at the famous Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta. Today almost everything has been rebuilt as best as possible, including the campanile, although in the Duomo the columns are still slightly askew. You then cycle through fields and meadows from one village to the next and look forward to Udine, a charming city where the "dolce vita" is within reach. In Piazza della Liberta, one of the most beautiful squares in Northern Italy, marvel at the Palladio Gate and the Venetian clock tower and don't miss an espresso or cappuccino. Stroll through the historic center, admire the Duomo and the Castello that rises on the hill overlooking the city.
