A scenic cycling tour takes you from Newcastle, England, along the coastal and castle route to Edinburgh, Scotland. You'll cycle past the expansive sandy beaches of Northumberland and the impressive castles of Dustanburgh and Bumburgh. A detour to Holy Island is also possible before crossing the border into Scotland and continuing through the idyllic Tweed Valley to Melrose. Your cycling tour ends in Scotland's capital, Edinburgh. A transfer back to Newcastle is provided in the late afternoon. Extend your cycling tour and book additional nights in Edinburgh or Newcastle for a more independent stay.

Arrive in Newcastle on your own. Use the rest of the day to explore the city on the Tyne. The following morning, there will be an information session about the tour, you will receive your travel documents, and if you have booked a rental bike, it will be handed over.

Overnight stay in Newcastle

The route follows the River Tyne towards the coast. Passing historic sites like Wallsend and the fishing quays of North Shields, you'll reach lively Tynemouth – ideal for a short break. The journey continues via Whitley Bay and Blyth into a more tranquil landscape, past the impressive Druridge Bay, before you arrive at your destination for the day, Warkworth, with its imposing castle.

Overnight stay: Warkworth

In the morning, you'll cycle first to the picturesque coastal village of Alnmouth. The route then takes you to the medieval castles of Dunstanburgh and Bamburgh, and through the idyllic village of Craster. In Bamburgh, the imposing fortress perched on its rock and the Grace Darling Museum are particularly impressive.

Accommodation location: Bamburgh

They follow the coast northwards to Lindisfarne, also known as Holy Island – an important site in early Christianity. If the tide and time allow, a detour to the island via the tidal path is worthwhile. Afterwards, they cycle on to the impressive border town of Berwick-upon-Tweed with its historic fortifications; a visit to Holy Island adds approximately 11 km to the stage.

Overnight location: Berwick-upon-Tweed

Your route takes you inland along the Tweed Valley to Kelso. A highlight is crossing the famous Union Suspension Bridge, as well as a stop at Chainbridge Honey Farm, where you can enjoy tea and cake on a vintage double-decker bus. Passing Norham Castle, you'll re-enter Scotland and continue on to the charming town of Kelso.

Overnight stay in Kelso

You'll cycle first to Melrose with its impressive Gothic abbey, the supposed final resting place of Robert the Bruce's heart. The route then follows the ever-narrowing Tweed Valley through wooded hills towards Innerleithen. Passing the historic Traquair House, you'll reach the lively small town, known for its mountain biking scene.

Accommodation location: Innerleithen

Your final leg takes you across the Moorfoot Hills, offering your first glimpses of Edinburgh. After the descent, you'll cycle through Dalkeith and Musselburgh before reaching the city center via the historic Innocent Tunnel and past Arthur's Seat. In the afternoon, you'll meet the Skedaddle representative, return your rental bike (if applicable), and can take the transfer back to Newcastle if you wish; the meeting point is conveniently located near Edinburgh Waverley train station.

Note:
If you book an extra night in Edinburgh, you will need to arrange your own return journey.
