Historic old towns, attractive castles and magnificent churches lure visitors from place to place in Franconia. Cities surrounded by forest and partly surrounded by towers and masonry present themselves like in a fairy tale. And every single place invites you to go on a culinary journey of discovery. It is not for nothing that the land of the Franconians is called "Genießerland". The art of the brewers has a long tradition here, as does that of the winegrowers, and their wines and beers go perfectly with the region's hearty fare. There is no question: the love for Franconia also goes through the stomach.

Tourenkarte der MAI 41

Day 1: Arrival in Bamberg

Individual arrival in Bamberg and embarkation from 16 p.m. Bamberg is a multifaceted city and at the same time a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The "island town" presents itself as little Venice, the "mountain town" as Franconian Rome and the "gardener town" as a unique specimen.

Day 2: Boat trip Bamberg - Hassfurt / Hassfurt - Schweinfurt, about 30 - 40 km

In the morning you reach Hassfurt with its beautiful historic old town. The city lies between two nature parks and is the location of charming sacred buildings such as the late Gothic knights' chapel and the parish church with figures by Tilmto Riemenschneider. Here you get on your bike and cycle to the former imperial city of Schweinfurt.

Day 3: Schweinfurt - Stammheim - Kitzingen, about 32 - 60 km

Today's destination is Kitzingen. The historic wine trading town is the location of the German Carnival Museum, which gives an insight into a significant part of Franconian customs. The city's landmark is the Falterturm with its crooked dome. In Kitzingen, old beer brewing tradition meets winemaking tradition, as evidenced by historic cellars. Some of Kitzingen's inns offer guests hearty Franconian fare such as sauerbraten with dumplings or "Karpfen Blau". Alternatively, you also have the option of staying on board until Stammheim and thus shortening the bike tour by around 25 kilometers.

Day 4: Kitzingen – Würzburg, about 40 km

Würzburg awaits you today with many sights. One of them is the Würzburg Residence, which is considered one of the most important palaces in Germany and has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage since 1981. The St. Kilian Cathedral and the Marienberg Fortress are also well-known. Würzburg is a center of Franconian wine and, as a young student city, is still full of life even in the evenings.

Day 5: Boat trip Würzburg – Karlstadt / Karlstadt – Lohr, about 30 km

You reach Karlstadt in the morning. Towers, gates and walls surround the old town with its half-timbered houses and small alleys. The destination of today's travel day is the city of Lohr Main. Typical Franconian half-timbered architecture also characterizes the old town of this gateway to the Spessart. Buildings like the KurmainThe castle underlines the fairytale character of the city.

Day 6: Boat trip Lohr - Wertheim / Wertheim - Freudenberg, about 30 km

You take the ship to the old residential town of Wertheim with the castle of the same name as its landmark. The town with its historic market square and perhaps the narrowest house in Franconia is the start of today's cycling stage to Freudenberg. High above that Main and the city of Freudenberg, the Freudenburg sits enthroned at the foothills of the Franconian Odenwald. The Freudenburg is very well known among castle connoisseurs because of its striking keep.

Day 7: Freudenberg - Aschaffenburg, about 50 km

The highlight of today's bike tour is Miltenberg with its 1200 captured Mildenburg. The “Planetary Cycle Path” accompanies you from Erlenbach to Kleinwallstadt. Here you can find information about the celestial bodies. The floodplain forest between Niedernheim and Nilkheim is pleasant to navigate in summer. Anywhere along the MainThere are benches or rest areas that invite you to rest or even swim. Your destination is the beautiful, tranquil university town of Aschaffenburg with its magnificent Renaissance castle Johannisburg made of red sandstone.
