Learn moreThe northwest coast of Portugal is known as the Costa Verde, or Green Coast, thanks to the abundance of vegetation that borders it and the nearby mountains of the Minho region. Traveling north from Porto, you'll experience the ever-changing coastal landscape, with wide sandy beaches, rocky coves, pebble beaches, pleasant seaside towns, and fishing villages. You'll also spend time in the small historic town of Viana do Castelo and eventually arrive in the charming town of Caminha, right at the northernmost point of Portugal's border.
While much of the route runs along the coast, sometimes you go inland to walk through fields, forests and villages, gaining a deeper insight into the lifestyle of rural Portuguese communities and small-scale farming practices.
With relatively short, relaxed walks, you have plenty of time and energy to explore the towns and villages where you are staying, and to take breaks along the way to spend time on the beach.
If you have more time, you could extend this coastal hiking holiday by starting your trip from Porto or spending a few days there before continuing north into Spain – perhaps as far as the charming coastal town of Baiona.
