The first cultural highlight of the day is Hillenraedt Castle, a beautiful 14th-century moated castle. The route leads through the surrounding Counts' Forests to Boukoul and continues along an old Roman road to the aristocratic Zuidewijk Spick estate. Roermond is bypassed on the way to Melick, a church village in the Roerdal valley. After crossing the small river, you reach the charming village of St. Odiliënberg. The route continues through the Sweeltje dunes to Montfort. If you have enough energy, a visit to the ruins of the old castle, with its information center, cellars, and castle garden, is highly recommended.
Overnight stay: Montfort
Near Montfort lies a valuable cultural landscape. At Duvelskei, there is a sweeping view across the fields of Grootbroek, where a large marshland once existed. A slight detour from the route allows you to visit the Cistercian abbey of Lilbosch. Back on the Pieterpad, the path leads past the recently discovered site of the Roman-era "Pey Treasure." Part of the route runs through the Eisenwald forest, crossing into Germany; near the border town of Isenbruch, you'll pass the narrowest point of the Netherlands. In Sittard, you can visit St. Peter's Church and the monastery quarter before ending the day in one of the cozy cafés in the old market square.
Overnight stay: Sittard
Shortly after setting off, you reach Kollenberg, a charming piece of nature close to the city, at whose highest point stands the St. Rosa Chapel. A total of seven chapels stand along the ascending path. At "Windraak," where water flows from the rock face, you can refill your water bottle. The route leads from the elevated church village of Puth along the Geleenbeek stream to Terborgh Castle. The path then continues through a quarry to the geological monument Diependal and on to Terstraten with its typical Limburg farmhouses. Along the way, there's a view of the "Giant of Schimmert," an old water tower. At about 130 meters, you reach the highest point of the Pieterpad trail. Finally, you pass through the beautiful Ravenswald forest to reach the hamlet of Strabeek.
Overnight stay: Strabeek (Valkenburg)
The stage begins by leading through Ingendael and the Bergse Heide, two contiguous nature reserves along the Geul River. Next, you reach the Blom marl pit, a deep, disused shaft where marl was extracted until 1999 and which now represents a valuable nature reserve. The path continues down into the Bemelergrubbe, passing small marl caves. Shortly after, the route leads through the suburbs of Maastricht towards the historic center. From there, the route heads towards Fort St. Pieter, situated on Sint-Pietersberg hill, which offers impressive views.
Accommodation location: Sint-Pietersberg
