Many cyclists already know the Rhine from Switzerland to Cologne, but the further beautiful route from Cologne to Holland is still unknown to most - quite wrongly, in our opinion! You can look forward to a consistently flat route that is rich in culture and nature, industrial history and historical sights. You begin your cycle tour in the heart of the cathedral city of Cologne. Marvel at the small fortified town of Zons with its completely preserved town wall and look forward to the lively old town of Düsseldorf with the "longest bar in the world". In Duisburg, take an impressive boat trip through the largest inland port in Europe and climb a disused blast furnace in the "Landschaftspark Duisburg Nord". A visit to the Prussian Museum in North Rhine-Westphalia is worthwhile in Wesel, and Germany's largest archaeological open-air museum awaits you in Xanten with impressive Roman excavations and replicas. You cycle through the wide floodplain landscape of the Lower Rhine to Emmerich with its beautiful Rhine promenade. Your final stage takes you in the middle of the Dutch Rhine delta to the Dutch shopping city of Arnhem.

Tourenkarte RheinradwegVisit the famous Cologne Cathedral and the old town, which is well worth seeing.

Overnight place: Cologne

You leave the cathedral city of Cologne in a good mood and cycle along the banks of the Rhine to the medieval town of Zons. Discover this old fortress town with its completely preserved city wall. Marvel at the mighty Rhine Tower (1388) and the still functioning windmill with a wooden grinder (17th century). On the Rhine cycle path you cycle comfortably into Düsseldorf's old town, which is also known as the “longest bar in the world”. This expression of Rhenish cheerfulness stands for over 250 pubs, restaurants and bars that line up in the streets of the old town. Relax on Burgplatz, which has been voted one of the most beautiful squares in Germany, and enjoy the wonderful view of the Rhine.

Overnight place: Düsseldorf

Today the Rhine cycle path takes you to Kaiserswerth with the picturesque ruins of the “Kaiserpfalz”. You can take a small ferry to the left bank of the Rhine. It's worth taking a detour to the Linn moated castle. The green river floodplains are now giving way to impressive industrial architecture. In Duisburg, be sure to take an informative boat tour through Europe's largest inland harbor before you end the evening comfortably in the inner harbor, which is peppered with many bars and restaurants.

Overnight place: Duisburg

After a short S-Bahn ride (6 minutes) you cycle in Duisburg-Meiderich directly to the “Landschaftspark Duisburg Nord”, a 200 hectare disused steelworks. As part of an industrial history tour (included), you climb the disused blast furnace, explore the ore bunker, casting hall, gasometer and blower hall. After this impressive tour, you follow a comfortable cycle path on a former railway line back to the banks of the Rhine. You then cycle through rural idylls and nature reserves along the Lower Rhine to the Hanseatic town of Wesel with the Prussian Museum NRW.

Overnight place: Wesel

Today you can look forward to Xanten with the historic city center, the exquisitely furnished St. Viktor Cathedral and the archaeological park. On the site of the Roman city of Colonia Ulpia Traiana, Germany's largest archaeological open-air museum invites you to take a stimulating excursion into history. After a worthwhile visit, you cycle along inviting swimming lakes to the “Wunderland Kalkar” amusement park and over the longest suspension bridge in Germany, the “Golden Gate on the Lower Rhine”. Enjoy the evening in the old Hanseatic town of Emmerich on the beautiful Rhine promenade, which is perfect for strolling.

Overnight place: Emmerich

You reach the border in the morning. On the Rhine cycle path you pass the point where the Rhine divides into Waal and Niederrijn. From here we speak of the Rhine Delta, which extends to the North Sea. With the best view, follow the Niederrijn on elevated causeways, over locks and bridges to the old town of Arnhem. Explore history in the “Bridge of Arnhem” information center, visit the open-air museum with more than 80 historic Dutch houses and windmills, or let yourself be tempted by the diverse shopping offerings.

Overnight place: Arnhem(Netherlands)

If you want, you can continue your cycle tour for another 230 km along the Rhine to the North Sea or you can quickly return to Cologne by train.
