On the English Channel coast, Somme Bay is a vital stopover for migratory birds and a remarkable conservation area! You will be amazed by the diversity of the landscapes and the rich flora and fauna.
Discover the charming coastal towns of Saint-Valery-sur-Somme and Le Crotoy, the long sandy beaches of Quend-Plage and Fort-Mahon, the pine-covered dunes, the rural landscape, and the Crécy Forest, home to unusual trees. Explore the cycle paths and country lanes to spot rare birds in the Marquenterre Park. And if you're lucky, you might even see the famous seals of the Somme!

You can choose from two cycling routes starting in Saint-Valery-sur-Somme. A shorter route (26 km) takes you along a comfortable cycle path to Cape Hourdel, whose lighthouse guards the entrance to the bay. From there, you take the "white road," a magnificent path along the Channel dunes, before returning to Saint-Valery. A longer option (39 or 49 km) initially leads inland through small villages to Cayeux-sur-Mer. You then continue along the white road, passing Cape Hourdel, before cycling along the edge of the bay back to Saint-Valery-sur-Somme.

Overnight location: Saint-Valery-sur-Somme

You cycle along the Le Crotoy seawall and past the Les Morettes ponds, home to a large bird population. Small country lanes lead you to Marquenterre Park, where we recommend a stop. Then follow the cycle path between the pine trees to the eco-villages of Quend-Plage. Enjoy a leisurely ride through the pine-covered dunes before arriving in Fort-Mahon-Plage.

If you prefer cycling to taking the steam train, you can cycle along the bay to Le Crotoy and its beautiful beach (+13 km).

After Fort-Mahon, the coastal atmosphere fades as you enter the rural hinterland of the Bay of Somme. The route winds through fields, stopping at the church square in Quend before reaching the small town of Rue. This former seaport and walled town boasts a medieval bell tower, two churches, and the legacy of the Caudron brothers, aviation pioneers of the early 20th century. The beach atmosphere returns in Le Crotoy.

From Le Crotoy, you can explore the majestic Crécy Forest. Follow the paths among the oaks and beeches. The more adventurous can take a detour deeper into the woods. Upon leaving the forest, you can also admire the 500-year-old Chartreux Oak. You reach Noyelles-sur-Mer by passing behind the hunting lodges and then continue to Saint-Valery by taking the cycle path along the bay.
