Overnight place: Schärding or Passau

From Schärding you cycle along the Inn Cycle Path to Passau, where you can visit the largest cathedral organ in the world. The next highlight awaits further east: Engelszell Abbey, the only Trappist monastery in Austria. If you want, you can also travel part of the way by boat from Passau (approx. mid-April to early October; on your own).

Overnight place: Upper Danube Valley

Today's first highlight is the Schlögener Donauschlinge, where the granite forces the river to form an extremely tight loop. At Aschach the valley widens and you cycle through the fertile Eferding Basin. The baroque Wilhering Abbey invites you to take a break before you reach the cultural city of Linz. After Linz you will again pass through rural towns and regions to Enns.

Overnight place: Enns

In Mauthausen, the concentration camp memorial commemorates a black chapter in history. The shipping town of Grein attracts its visitors with the Greinburg Castle, the oldest municipal theater in Austria and the Maritime Museum. Drive through the wild and romantic Strudengau to the old Roman town of Ybbs. This is where the gentle landscape of the Nibelungengau begins and from afar you can see the Maria Taferl pilgrimage church, which towers over the Danube valley.

Overnight place: Marbach or Maria Tafell

Today you will experience what is probably the most beautiful part of your journey, the picturesque Wachau. In Melk you should visit the Benedictine monastery and the idyllic places in the Wachau invite you to rest. Passing emerald-green vines you reach Dürnstein with its castle ruins. If you want, you can also travel part of the way through the Wachau by boat (approx. mid-April to mid-October; on your own). Worth seeing is the Kremshe old town with its arcaded courtyards and baroque town houses.

Overnight place: Krems or Trais wall

Shortly before Vienna, the valley narrows again, the Danube passes through the Vienna Gate on the edge of the Vienna Woods and takes you via Klosterneuburg to the cosmopolitan city of Vienna, famous for its coffee house culture and its numerous sights. Discover the city on a horse-drawn carriage ride and end the trip with a cozy evening at a wine tavern.

1 day of rain, 7 days of sweltering heat

In hindsight we would book the slower tour. The heat did it all. We would have liked to have had more time to be able to enjoy the great cities longer. Also the small villages along the way waren beautiful. Unfortunately, many paths are not paved and that takes time. The hotels waren OK. Unfortunately, with the exception of Passau, never with air conditioning. It was very noisy in the cities and very hot with the windows closed. The hotel in Donauwörth Wörnitzstein far too far away. In Passau we didn't receive the suitcase until 18.45 p.m., which was very unpleasant. We were always received very friendly. Everything was clean and the breakfasts were always great.

Schärding-Passau-Vienna tour is recommended

Did this tour in early May 2013 and was very excited. Very good organization, luggage transport worked great, hotels and inns waren very well chosen. Met super friendly people on the whole tour and also in the accommodations. Will do the tour again next year. It hit me hard that shortly after my tour people along the Danube were also affected by the flooding waren. I hope that the damage could be repaired quickly.
