From Schärding you cycle along the Inn cycle path to Passau, where you can visit the largest cathedral organ in the world. Further east, the next highlight awaits you: Engelszell Abbey, the only Trappist monastery in Austria.

Overnight stay: Upper Danube Valley

Today's first highlight of your cycling holiday is the Schlögener Danube loop, where the granite forces the river into an extremely tight loop. At Aschach the valley widens and you cycle through the fertile Eferding Basin. The baroque Wilhering Abbey invites you to take a break before you reach the cultural city of Linz. After Linz you pass through rural towns and regions again until you reach Enns.

In Mauthausen, the concentration camp memorial commemorates a dark chapter in history. The shipping town of Grein attracts visitors with Greinburg Castle, the oldest city theater in Austria and the shipping museum. You drive through the wild and romantic Strudengau to the old Roman town of Ybbs. Here the gentle landscape of the Nibelungengau begins and from afar you can see the pilgrimage church of Maria Taferl, which towers over the Danube valley.

Today you will experience the most beautiful part of your cycling tour, the picturesque Wachau. Passing emerald green vines, you will reach Dürnstein. If you want, you can also travel a part of the Wachau by boat today (mid-April to the end of October, on your own). The Kremsthe old town with its arcaded courtyards and baroque town houses

Shortly before Vienna, the valley narrows again, the Danube passes through the Vienna Gate on the edge of the Vienna Woods and leads you via Klosterneuburg to the cosmopolitan city of Vienna, famous for its coffee house culture and its numerous sights. 1 day of rain, 7 days of sweltering heat

In hindsight, we would have booked the slower tour. The heat got to everyone. We would have liked to have had more time to enjoy the great cities for longer. The small villages along the route were also beautiful. Unfortunately, many of the roads are not paved and that takes time. The hotels were OK. Unfortunately, with the exception of Passau, they never had air conditioning. It was very loud in the cities and very hot with the windows closed. The hotel in Donauwörth Wörnitzstein was much too far away. In Passau we didn't get our suitcase until 18.45: p.m., which was very unpleasant. We were always greeted very friendly. Everything was clean and the breakfasts were always tip-top.

Schärding-Passau-Vienna tour is recommended

I did this tour at the beginning of May 2013 and was very impressed. Very well organized, luggage transport worked really well, hotels and inns were very well chosen. I met really friendly people on the whole tour and also in the accommodations. I will repeat the tour next year. I was shocked that shortly after my tour the people along the Danube were also affected by the flooding. I hope that the damage can be repaired quickly.
