Poland's most beautiful mountain river, the Dunajec (pronounced Dunajez, meaning "son of the Danube" in Old Polish), flows from the High Tatras, first through a wide valley basin surrounded by picturesque mountain ranges. Then the river cuts through the limestone cliffs of the Pieniny Mountains and the verdant Beskids. In this valley, we find ourselves on paths that rival the beauty of Europe's most famous river valley cycle routes.

A unique experience awaits, offering an encounter with authentic folklore and the traditions of the Gorals and Zipsers who live here. The stages are not very long, and in addition to the main route, there are several opportunities to take interesting detours. Some sections lead through Slovakia.

Arrival in Krakow and accommodation for the first night in a centrally located hotel. Exploration of Krakow's Old Town and its famous nightlife.

Overnight stay in Krakow

You can choose your bikes at our rental shop. Around 11:00 AM, you'll take a bus to Podhale, to Żab, the highest village in Poland (bus ride approx. 2,5 hours). There, during your first descent, via the village of Poronin to Zakopane, you can enjoy the beautiful panorama of the High Tatras. Here, the folk culture of the Tatra inhabitants (Gorals) has been preserved in a particularly distinctive way in their music, songs, and traditional costumes. The unique wooden architecture (the so-called Zakopane style) with its unforgettable charm can only be found here. During a break, you can sample the famous "Oscypek," the sheep's cheese produced in local Goral huts.

Overnight stay: Zakopane

Take a funicular railway up Gubalowka Mountain. From there, cycle downhill through the long, linear village of Dzianisz to the famous Chocholow – a "living open-air museum." The rocky Tatra peaks provide a beautiful contrast to the lush green mountain meadows. Here, you can take advantage of the newest cycle paths: a flat cycle track built on the former railway line. During a rest stop, you can sample the renowned "Oscypek," a sheep's cheese produced in the local Goral huts. You'll pass through Ludzmierz (a famous Marian pilgrimage site) and finally reach the town of Nowy Targ, where you'll spend the night.

Overnight stay: Nowy Targ

First, you'll drive directly along the Dunajec River to Lopuszna, home to an old manor house. Upon arriving in Nowa Biała, you can admire the impressive Biała River gorge carved through the limestone cliffs. In Dębno, you'll find Poland's oldest wooden church, dating back to 1500 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You'll then enter the Spiš region, a historic area steeped in history and rich folklore. For centuries, the Gorals and Ruthenians lived in the villages, the German population in the towns, and the Hungarian nobility in the castles. You'll drive along the reservoir to one of these castles in Niedzica and spend the night in a nearby hotel. A further excursion takes you to Osturna (Asthorn) in Slovakia, an ancient linear village with numerous colorful wooden houses.

Overnight stay: Niedzica

Today is the highlight of the trip! Cycling directly along the Dunajec River (which forms a border here), you'll reach Sromowce, where you'll cross the newly built bridge to the Slovakian village of Cerveny Klastor. Above the "Red Monastery," once inhabited by Carthusian monks, rises the magnificent, three-peaked mountain massif known as the "Three Crowns." From there, you'll continue along the Pieniny Trail, a path open only to pedestrians and cyclists. This trail, carved into the rock, runs along the entire length of the Dunajec Gorge. The breathtaking limestone cliffs, rising up to 300 meters above the river, and the lush vegetation along the way will quickly make you forget the stresses of everyday life. In Lesnica, you can leave your bike and take a two-hour raft trip on the Dunajec. Afterward, an elegant cycle path will lead you to the old spa town of Szczawnica. For those who enjoy cycling, there is another option to cycle to the charming valley "Dolina Bialej Wody".

Overnight stay: Szczawnica

This stage leads through the verdant Dunajec Gorge, so named because the riverbed cuts right through two of the Beskid mountain ranges. As the name suggests, you won't find any rock faces here, but rather impressively green, beech-covered slopes. The next stage takes you along winding paths past pretty orchards and the decorated farmhouses of the village of Tylmanowa. You'll have lunch at the inn in the village of Lacko, famous for its plum brandy. In Golkowice, you'll bid farewell to the Dunajec and continue on to Rytro, an old knightly village at the foot of the castle ruins. You'll check into a hotel situated on the banks of the Poprad, a tributary of the Dunajec. To celebrate your last evening, we recommend enjoying some fried trout.

Accommodation location: Rytro

After breakfast, you can explore the Poprad River valley (a short train ride is also possible). The route takes you past mineral springs and the open-air swimming pool in the spa town of Piwniczna. Then it's on to Stary Sącz (Old Sącz), one of the most beautiful small towns in southern Poland. You'll explore its narrow streets by bicycle. Afterwards, you'll continue comfortably along a newly built cycle path to Nowy Sącz (New Sącz), a larger historic town with a beautiful market square, an Art Nouveau town hall, and a pedestrian zone with many restaurants. After lunch, you'll return to Kraków (approximately a 2,5-hour bus ride). You'll spend your last night in Kraków. A dinner with Klezmer music in the former Jewish quarter of Kazimierz concludes your trip.
