In Germany, many rivers have lost their natural course and floodplain landscape. Not so the Peene. It is a river in its natural course. Bank areas overgrown with reeds, islands in the course of the river, and partly in wide meanders, the Peene flows through its natural bed towards the Baltic Sea. Behind Anklam, the Peene widens in a delta towards the Stettiner Haff and the backwaters of the island of Usedom. The stream runs high to Wolgast along the Western Pomeranian coast, where it loses itself in the Baltic Sea in the Greifswalder Bodden near Peenemünde.

View of the Müritz in Röbel

Arrive on your own. Müritzstadt is the starting point for your cycle tour along the Peene. The Peene is still what you can call an original river with a natural flow. In the coming days, this river landscape will determine the landscape of your cycle tour on the way to the Baltic Sea.

Overnight place: Waren (Müritz) or Klink

Today the journey goes through the wide undulating landscape of Mecklenburg Switzerland to the Reuterstadt Stavenhagen. Anyone interested in the Low German literature of the local writer Fritz Reuter will find comprehensive information in the Reuter Museum there. Over 1000-year-old oak trees can be admired not far from Stavenhagen near Ivenack.

Overnight place: Stavenhagen

Past the Malchiner See to the Kummerower See, which marks the beginning of the Peene.
From Verchen on Lake Kummerow you follow the course of the Peenetal to Demmin in Western Pomerania.

Overnight place: Demmin or surroundings

On the way to Loitz, an observation tower at the upper edge of the valley offers a spectacular view of the expanse of the river, its tributaries, reed beds and islets. Time to observe the birdlife and life on the river. The landscape around the river valley becomes increasingly flat and the wide sky over Western Pomerania accompanies your journey to or from Anklam.

Overnight place: Love or Anklam

Anklam was badly damaged in World War II. The history of the city is documented in a permanent exhibition in the Marienkirche. The museum dedicated to the aviation pioneer Otto Lilienthal is a must (own). Continue either to the Anklamer ferry to Usedom or around the Peene delta on the cycle path to the Anklamer bridge to the island of Usedom. On the lagoon side you cycle up to the imperial baths. A short detour to Kamminke rewards the cyclist with a wide view of the Szczecin Lagoon above the village.

Overnight place: Imperial baths or surroundings

Into the hustle and bustle of the baths. The cyclist rides in the 1st row along the coast on the cycle path with a view of the Baltic Sea. Perhaps you would like to visit the Polish town of Świnoujście before continuing on to the northern part of the island to Wolgast. The cycle path goes along the more than 8 km long promenade to Swinemünde. The old seaside resort has its charm and enjoys a wide, sometimes sophisticated beach promenade with restaurants, cafés and shops. Follow the Baltic Coast Cycle Path up to Peenemünde and back along the Storm to the Hanseatic city of Wolgast.

Overnight place: Wolgast

Wolgast was once a princely residence of the Pomeranian dukes. But also the city of the painter Philipp Otto Runge. A 19th century artist of the Romantic period. Your journey follows the mainland side of the river to Freest, famous for its fishermen's carpets, and on to the seaside resort of Lubmin. Now the Greifswalder Bodden on the right hand side forms the lake scenery of your cycle tour with the destination and the city silhouette of Greifswald in the west. Greifswald is a university town and is home to the Pomeranian State Museum, which shows the history of the state and a collection of paintings worth seeing to the interested visitor.

Overnight place: Greifswald or the surrounding area

After breakfast, you will travel home on your own to Waren (Müritz). Alternatively, there is the option of an extra night in Greifswald or you can use the option of a return transfer to Waren.
