The Elbe Cycle Path - Germany's most popular long-distance cycle path. You decide which section and in which direction you want to cycle. A recommendation is difficult because you will find an incredible density of culture and nature. Dresden Frauenkirche, Meissen porcelain, Sachsenwein, Luther in Wittenberg, Bauhaus in Dessau, Hundertwasser in Magdeburg, there is a lot to experience. On a trip to Saxon Switzerland, you can swap your bike for hiking boots and scale the heights of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. Stay in a café with a typical Saxon cake, the "Eierschecke". Discover your personal Elbe cycle path.

Dresden, the Florence on the Elbe, is the cultural metropolis of Saxony. The cityscape features the Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady) in the ensemble of Brühl's Terrace, the Hofkirche (Court Church), the Semper Opera House, and the Zwinger Palace. Especially for cyclists, you always have a beautiful view of the cityscape from the banks of the Elbe.

 

 

Overnight place: Dresden

Today's excursion takes you to the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. You cycle along the banks of the Elbe, past the Albrecht Castles and see the former royal vineyards on the hillside. We continue past the Blue Wonder, an Elbe bridge that crosses the Elbe in a suspension construction without a pier, towards Pirna. On the way you pass the pleasure palace Pillnitz with pleasure garden. In the town of Pirna you should visit the market square with its Renaissance town hall. You cycle through the narrowing Elbe valley, pass the town of Wehlen and reach the spa town of Rathen. The rock castle and the bastion, which you can reach on foot from the valley, lure you here. You can take a ferry across the Elbe (on your own) to Königstein, the town at the foot of Königstein Fortress
(on their own). At the end of your tour, you should stop off in Bad Schandau on the Elbe promenade for tea or coffee and taste a Saxon cake specialty. Your return journey from Bad Schandau takes place on your own with the S-Bahn directly to Dresden.

 

Overnight place: Dresden like the day before

On the way to Meissen, it is worth leaving the Elbe Cycle Path and cycling the vineyards between Radebeul and Meissen. In Radebeul there is the opportunity to visit the Karl May Museum (own management) or to take one of the guided tours of Wackerbarth Castle (own management). A must in Meissen should be a visit to the Meissen Porcelain Manufactory (own management) and the Albrechtsburg Castle (own management).

 

Overnight place: Meißen

Along the northernmost vineyards in Germany to Diesbar-Seußlitz. In addition to the baroque castle with a beautiful garden, the wine-growing village offers a variety of places to stop and get to know and taste Saxon wine. Continue along the Elbe to the former steel town of Riesa, where you can visit the pasta factory for free and finally cycle to Strehla. Strehla itself is an idyllic town with over
1000 year stories.

Today the former fortress town of Torgau is your destination. At a historical place met here in
2nd World War at the Elbe Bridge, the Soviets and Americans at each other. On the stage, the path leads via the town of Mühlberg with the Cistercian monastery and the Treblitz tree park, past the large district town of Torgau.

 

 

Overnight place: Torgau

On the way from Torgau to Wittenberg you cycle past Lichtenberg Castle, via Pretzsch along the Elbe to Lutherstadt Wittenberg. The largest exhibition on the history of the Reformation in the Luther Hall in Wittenberg invites you to follow in the footsteps of Martin Luther. The town church of St. Marien (UNESCO World Heritage) is also worth seeing.

 

Overnight place: Wittenberg or the surrounding area

Via the Elbe you reach the town of Wörlitz with its 112-hectare Wörlitzer Park, which was built between 1765 and 1819 as the first English-style landscape park on the European mainland. You can choose to follow the Elbe directly or cycle to Dessau via the baroque town of Oranienbaum. Dessau was once the residence of the Ascanians and, with the establishment of the Bauhaus in 1925, has become an address with an international reputation in art, architecture and design.

Have a nice bike trip

Everything was super organized. The hotels easy to find. Well-chosen cycle routes. Unfortunately, due to the flooding, a few crossings were closed and there was no information from the organization. That was too bad. Otherwise everything was good.

Everything is fine despite Corona

The hotels were generally very good, although you always have the feeling that you're getting the absolute worst room in the hotel. Well, it's just about OK for one night... The tour description was also very detailed and the cycle paths were very well signposted. Overall, there was not enough time to explore the cities in detail, but that's secondary to the cycle tours.
