On your own initiative. Following in Martin Luther's footsteps, the largest exhibition on the history of the Reformation invites you to the Luther Hall in Wittenberg. The St. Mary's Church (UNESCO World Heritage) is also worth seeing.

Today you cycle past Lichtenberg Castle via Pretzsch along the Elbe. Your destination is the former fortress town of Torgau. This is where the Soviets and Americans met at the Elbe Bridge during World War II.

On the stage, the path leads through the town of Mühlberg with the Cistercian monastery and the Treblitz tree park. Further along the Elbe to Strehla, an idyllic town with a history of more than 1000 years. Continue cycling to the former steel town of Riesa, where you can visit the pasta factory for free.

Today the path leads you along the northernmost vineyards in Germany to Diesbar-Seußlitz. In addition to the baroque castle with a beautiful garden, the wine-growing village offers a variety of places to stop and get to know and taste Saxon wine. When you arrive in Meissen, a visit to the Porzellan Manufaktur (under your own management) and the Albrechtsburg (under your own management) is a must.

On the way from Meissen, it is worth leaving the Elbe cycle path and cycling the vineyards between Radebeul and Meissen. In Radebeul there is the opportunity to visit the Karl May Museum (own management) or to take one of the guided tours of Wackerbarth Castle (own management). In the afternoon you will reach Dresden, the Florence on the Elbe and the cultural metropolis of Saxony. In the cityscape, the Frauenkirche can be seen in the ensemble with the Brühlsche Terrasse, the Hofkirche, the Semperoper and the Zwinger. Especially as a cyclist you always have a beautiful view of the cityscape from the Elbe.

Overnight place: Dresden

Today's excursion takes you to the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. You cycle along the banks of the Elbe, past the Albrecht Castles and see the former royal vineyards on the hillside. We continue past the Blue Wonder, an Elbe bridge that crosses the Elbe in a suspension construction without a pier, towards Pirna. On the way you pass the pleasure palace Pillnitz with pleasure garden. In the town of Pirna you should visit the market square with its Renaissance town hall. You cycle through the narrowing Elbe valley, pass the town of Wehlen and reach the spa town of Rathen. The rock castle and the bastion, which you can reach on foot from the valley, lure you here. You can take your own ferry across the Elbe to Königstein, the town at the foot of Königstein Fortress (own). At the end of your tour you should stop off in Bad Schandau on the Elbe promenade for tea or coffee and taste a Saxon cake specialty. Your return journey from Bad Schandau takes place on your own with the S-Bahn directly to Dresden.

A dream journey

I consciously decided to travel upriver - on the one hand the wind conditions are more favorable, which really proved to be the case on this trip in June, on the other hand you end up in the particularly spectacular landscapes (Elbe Sandstone Mountains) and in particularly interesting cities (Dresden, Meissen). The cycle path is excellently developed, 95% on well-paved service roads or on the dike/directly on the Elbe, without car traffic. The daily stages are easy to do, only the first day with almost 70 km was not so easy for me in the end - it is advisable to leave really early on this day in order to be able to take enough breaks. The cycle path is practically completely level throughout, only between Dresden and Bad Schandau are there 3 smaller inclines, which are easy to cope with. I did not return from Bad Schandau to Dresden with the (fast) S-Bahn, but with the ship, which is particularly scenic because you can see a lot from the water on the banks that remains hidden from the bike path.
