A recommendation is difficult because you will find an incredible density of culture and nature. Dresden Frauenkirche, Meissen porcelain, Sachsenwein, Luther in Wittenberg, Bauhaus in Dessau, Hundertwasser in Magdeburg, there is a lot to experience.

Info: Your tour starts in Dresden and takes you to Magdeburg. If you only want to cycle to Dessau or Wittenberg, then take a look at the tours mentioned at the top of this page. (ELB 06 & ELB 07)

Arrival in the afternoon. Dresden, the Florence on the Elbe, is the cultural metropolis of Saxony. In the cityscape, the Frauenkirche can be seen in the ensemble with the Brühlsche Terrasse, the Hofkirche, the Semperoper and the Zwinger. Especially as a cyclist you always have a beautiful view of the cityscape from the Elbe.

On the way to Meissen, it is worth leaving the Elbe Cycle Path and visiting the vineyards between Radebeul and Meissen. In Radebeul there is the opportunity to visit the Karl May Museum (own management) or to take one of the guided tours of Wackerbarth Castle (own management). A must in Meissen should be a visit to the Meissen Porcelain Manufactory (own management) and the Albrechtsburg Castle (own management).

Along the northernmost vineyards in Germany to Diesbar-Seußlitz. In addition to the baroque castle with a beautiful garden, the wine-growing village offers a variety of places to stop and get to know and taste Saxon wine. Continue along the Elbe to the former steel town of Riesa, where you can visit the pasta factory for free, and finally to Strehla. Strehla itself is an idyllic town with over 1000 years of history.

Today the former fortress town of Torgau is your destination. This is where the Soviets and Americans met at the Elbe Bridge during World War II. On the stage, the path leads via the town of Mühlberg with the Cistercian monastery and the Treblitz tree park, past the large district town of Torgau.

On the way from Torgau to Wittenberg you cycle past Lichtenberg Castle, via Pretzsch along the Elbe to Lutherstadt Wittenberg. The largest exhibition on the history of the Reformation in the Luther Hall in Wittenberg invites you to follow in the footsteps of Martin Luther. The town church of St. Marien (UNESCO World Heritage) is also worth seeing.

Via the Elbe you reach the town of Wörlitz with its 112-hectare Wörlitzer Park, which was built between 1765 and 1819 as the first English-style landscape park on the European mainland. You can choose to follow the Elbe directly or cycle to Dessau via the baroque town of Oranienbaum. Dessau was once the residence of the Ascanians and, with the establishment of the Bauhaus in 1925, has become an address with an international reputation in art, architecture and design.

You cycle through the river meadows of the Elbe to Aken. The small town is now a monument and once owned by Albrecht includes a city wall with 14 defense towers and three city gate towers, which have been preserved without major destruction for 700 years. Your journey continues to Barby.

The tour was super good from the bike path. Unfortunately, the distance from Magdeburg to Dessau was not correct at all, because it was 90 km. Everything else, like hotels and luggage transport, is great.

Elbe cycle path from 30.07. until 08.08.2015

We were satisfied and would travel with you again. You can't do anything about the extremely hot weather at the time and the sometimes missing air conditioning, minibar or insufficient sun protection in front of the windows. Perhaps it would have been better in rooms in price category I. We particularly liked the Welcome Hotel in Meissen. You should point out in your travel documents that tourists in Dresden have had to pay an "infrastructure surcharge" since July 01.07.2015st, XNUMX, similar to the well-known visitor's tax.

Varied river landscape

We really enjoyed the Elberadweg Dresden-Magdeburg with the widening Elbe valley, the cities with their past, the rich culture. The will of the population to get the best out of little resources is always amazing, especially here, where the next flood with its destructive power is only a matter of time. On a day with a luckily short stage, we had a very strong headwind. Our recommendation: take the path in the opposite direction. The Elbe only has a drop of 1 m over 17 km. And we probably wouldn't have made it through the last stage with its nutritious 92 km if there was a headwind.
