You begin at the Flensburg Fjord, follow the Baltic coast with its long sandy beaches and small fishing villages, cross the Kiel Canal, and finally reach the Elbe River. You cycle along this mighty waterway to the Elbe metropolis of Hamburg. Maritime towns, historic harbors, impressive locks, and North German hospitality make this trip a truly special experience.

The rum and port city of Flensburg impresses with its historic city center, lovingly restored merchant courtyards and lively harbor.

Overnight location: Flensburg

Today you'll follow the Flensburg Fjord to Gelting Bay. Passing natural beaches, small marinas, and picturesque fishing villages, the route leads through the rolling hills of Angeln. Your destination is the port town of Kappeln on the Schlei, with its famous drawbridge, historic herring weir, and numerous cafes.

Today's stage connects the Schlei fjord with Eckernförde Bay. Passing through Arnis – Germany's smallest town – and the Baltic Sea resort of Damp, you'll reach the Baltic coast. Following the coastline, you'll finally arrive in Eckernförde with its historic harbor, the narrow streets of the old town, and the long beach promenade.

Overnight location: Eckernförde

You leave the Baltic coast and cycle through the green inland region of Schleswig-Holstein to the Kiel Canal. The world-famous Rendsburg Transporter Bridge is visible from afar. The city offers numerous attractions, including its old town, parade ground, and the impressive railway viaduct.

Overnight stay in Rendsburg

Today you will travel along the entire western section of the Kiel Canal. Numerous ferries connect both sides of the canal, providing a variety of sights and experiences. In Brunsbüttel, you will witness the impressive lock system where the canal flows into the Elbe River.

Overnight location: Brunsbüttel

They cross from the Kiel Canal to the Elbe River and follow the Elbe Cycle Path upstream. Extensive marshlands, dikes, and orchards characterize the landscape. In Glückstadt, the historic market square and the inland harbor invite you to take a break. Alternatively, the route continues to Elmshorn.

Overnight stay: Glückstadt or Elmshorn

On the final leg, the Elbe River continues to accompany you towards Hamburg. Passing the Altes Land region with its extensive orchards, you reach the Hanseatic city. Soon, the Landungsbrücken (St. Pauli Piers), the Elbphilharmonie concert hall, and the Port of Hamburg come into view. Your cycling tour ends either in Hamburg-Altona or in Hamburg city center.
