Brick Gothic and Heath Romanticism – from Mölln through the Lüneburg Heath to Hamburg

On the Heath cycling tour, we will take you to traditional trading towns that are located in the middle of Schleswig-Holstein's lake landscape, on the Elbe and along the historic Salt Road. Beautiful towns with brick Gothic architecture, half-timbered houses and cobblestones and the idyllic landscape of the Lüneburg Heath Nature Park are the main ingredients of this e-bike tour, which ends in the Hanseatic city of Hamburg. You start in picturesque Mölln, which lies in the middle of glittering lakes and green forests: you will meet the town's most famous son, Till Eulenspiegel, on the market square with its pretty half-timbered houses. On your trip to Ratzeburg, we will tell you about Henry the Lion, who had the mighty brick cathedral built in the 12th century. The unique island location of the historic town will inspire you. Along the old salt road you will go to the "shipper's town" of Lauenburg on the Elbe, whose lovingly renovated old town stretches along the river. Once you arrive in Lower Saxony, you can spot storks and herons in the flat grassland of the Elbe marshes. On the Elbe Lateral Canal, we will show you the Scharnebeck boat lift: Here, the boats travel by elevator! With a bit of luck, you will see how large barges negotiate the 38-meter elevation between the canal sections. In the Hanseatic city of Lüneburg, the buildings, alleys and squares of the well-preserved city center bear witness to the wealth that the city once acquired through its medieval salt monopoly. Now it's time to head to the countryside: In the Lüneburg Heath Nature Reserve, you can explore the gently rolling heath, geest and forest landscape. Heather, juniper bushes, birch and old oak trees characterize this unique, traffic-free natural landscape, with its herds of Heidschnucke sheep, beehives and horse-drawn carriages. Pretty heath villages such as Egestorf and Undeloh with their wooden bell towers and the thatched farmhouses in Wilsede contribute to the romantic overall picture. On small paths and with a relaxed city entrance through greenery and along the water, you finally arrive in the fascinating port city of Hamburg with its UNESCO-protected Speicherstadt. Comfortable 4-star hotels with two double overnight stays contribute to your relaxation: you stay in a Wilhelminian-era house on the lake, in a converted mill complex in the heart of Lüneburg, in a family-run wellness hotel on the edge of the heath and in the middle of Hamburg's Speicherstadt.

Individual arrival at the starting hotel. a) Train: Good train connections to Mölln. Return journey can be booked from Hamburg. b) Car: Parking options near the starting hotel/at the end hotel (fees apply). At 18 p.m. our tour guide will greet you at the beautifully located Hotel Waldhalle just outside Mölln on the Schmalsee. You will sleep and eat here for the next two evenings.

Your cycling stage will first take you to Ratzeburg to the brick cathedral. Then it goes around the lake. Through beech and oak forests, with frequent views of the lake, you cycle up and down on unpaved nature trails, small asphalt roads and cycle paths. After the picnic by the water, enjoy your coffee break in pretty Mölln before you return to your hotel on the edge of the forest.

The first destination of the day is the “shipper’s town” of Lauenburg on the Elbe. After a stop in the charming old town, you cross the river. Your e-bikes roll through the Elbe marshes to the Elbe Lateral Canal and to the Scharnebeck boat lift. On the outskirts of Lüneburg, you can take a look at the ensemble of the Lüne Monastery before you reach the old town. Your Hotel Bergström is located on the banks of the Ilmenau, right next to the Old Crane from 1346. The evening is at your leisure.

You cycle on small country roads and farm tracks through fields, woods and avenues to Egestorf with its wooden bell tower. You have reached the Lüneburg Heath Nature Park and are getting your first glimpse of the heath landscape. You cycle through the pretty heath village of Undeloh to Hanstedt. Here the family-run Hotel Sellhorn welcomes you for the next two nights and dinner.

Today you will take a tour through the heart of the Lüneburg Heath Nature Park, with its unique natural landscape of heather, juniper bushes, sandy areas and woodland. You will come across horse-drawn carriages and herds of Heidschnucke sheep, which are looked after by their shepherds. The thatched, old farmhouses around Wilsede complete the heath romance. Back in your comfortable hotel, you can relax in the wellness area with swimming pool and sauna.

Your stage to the north runs along farm tracks, small streets and avenues through fields, forests and pretty villages. In the "Black Mountains" you stop at the Seppensen open-air museum. The route continues into the suburbs of Hamburg and along cycle paths through green areas and along the water to the center. Your noble hotel AMERON is located in the Speicherstadt. After the city tour you enjoy your final meal in a restaurant.

After breakfast, the heathland cycling tour ends. Car drivers can return to Mölln by train (costs not included, duration 1 - 1 ½ hours depending on the connection).
