Coal, miners and culture – on the Ruhr from Dortmund to Duisburg

We will take you on a journey through German industrial history: The Ruhr region is changing from a coal region to a cultural region with a high recreational value. On our cycle tour from Dortmund to Duisburg we will show you the most beautiful sides of the "district". You will be surprised at how green the Ruhr region is! The floodplains of the gently flowing Ruhr are a paradise for grazing cows, horses, geese and families of ducks. You can cycle leisurely on the Ruhr Valley cycle path and follow former railway lines. And we will tell you stories from the allotment garden, about the "Küdchen" and the "Grandma".

You start in Dortmund: Where the Phönix Ost steelworks once stood, one of the city's most sought-after residential areas, the Phönix Lake, now beckons. The Ruhr takes you to where it all began: the Nachtigall mine in Muttental. Hattingen is a surprising, picturesque little town with half-timbered houses in the rural part of the Ruhr area.

In Essen, the Krupp family built the Villa Hügel as their family home and also the garden city Margarethenhöhe. You will experience the world cultural heritage site of the Zollverein Coal Mine, which is home to the Red Dot Design Museum, among other things. The Rhine-Herne Canal will take you to the Gasometer in Oberhausen, one of the most unusual and largest exhibition halls in Europe. On the way to Duisburg, you will take a detour to the Duisburg-Nord Landscape Park. If you wish, you can take a harbor tour of the largest inland harbor in the world on your own after the trip (not included).

You will stay in comfortable and modern hotels, with a double overnight stay on the Margarethenhöhe. You can sample local beer in the small Bergmann brewery. You will dine in Dortmund's oldest inn, and we have selected well-known hotel restaurants and restaurants for you.

Diverse highlights in the "Revier"

  • the World Heritage Site Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex
  • the tranquil floodplain landscape of the Ruhr
  • two nights in the Art Nouveau settlement Margarethenhöhe
  • one of the most original and highest exhibition halls in Europe – the Gasometer

Individual arrival at the starting hotel. Secure parking near the starting hotel (fees apply).

At 14 p.m. our tour guide will greet you at the modern Hampton by Hilton Dortmund Phoenix See hotel. You will then take a short bike ride around the newly created Phönixsee and to the former Phönix Ost steelworks, an impressive industrial monument. Afterwards you can fortify yourself in the Bergmann brewery - true to the in-house motto: hard work, honest pay. For dinner we will take you to the oldest inn in Dortmund.

After a few kilometers of cycling you reach the Ruhr: you follow the quiet river through its lovely meadows to the Muttental. After the lunch picnic, you will visit the Nachtigall colliery: Here you will find out where and how it all began. Later, your e-bikes roll along Lake Kemnader. The Henrichshütte is on your way before you reach the half-timbered town of Hattingen. You stay overnight and eat a few kilometers outside in the rural Hotel Zum Hackstück.

In the morning you stop with your bikes in the beautiful old town of Hattingen. On the Ruhr we tell you something about the historical towpath. On the south bank of Lake Baldeney you cross a weir: the fish take the elevator here! Through the Kruppwald you reach Essen on the Margarethenhöhe. When you arrive, you will discover the arcades and archways of the beautiful garden settlement by bike. You will sleep for two nights in the comfortable Hotel Margarethenhöhe. Tonight you will eat in the hotel restaurant.

Your e-bikes roll down to the gasometer along a railway line and through allotment gardens. You will experience the fascination of the gigantic exhibition hall and the view from the old gas storage facility. Later you drive relaxed along the Rhine-Herne Canal to the Zollverein Coal Mine. During your tour you will learn why UNESCO counts this symbol of successful structural change as a world cultural heritage site. Back at the hotel, you have the evening at your leisure. You can also take a trip to Rüttenscheider Straße, Essen's nightlife district.

After a short stop at Villa Hügel, you follow the course of the Ruhr again. Large horse paddocks and riding stables are on your way to Mühlheim: you stop at Broich Castle, the oldest Carolingian fortress north of the Alps. Finally, you reach the foothills of Duisburg harbor. A detour takes you to the impressive Duisburg-Nord landscape park. From here, you drive along the Rhine to the mouth of the Ruhr and into the old town to your Wyndham Hotel Duisburger Hof. For the final dinner, we take you to the trendy district at the newly designed inner harbor.

The Ruhr area cycle tour ends after breakfast. If you want, you can visit the Duisburg Cultural and City History Museum or the Küppersmühle Museum on your own or take a harbor tour (all suggestions are not included in the tour price).
