On a hike on the Harzer-Hexen-Stieg you cross mystical beech and spruce forests and hike through the world cultural heritage "Oberharzhe water shelf". Ponds, streams and numerous ditches accompany you on your way towards Thale. You reach the Brocken through the high moor and can enjoy the unique view of the green surroundings high up.

It initially goes uphill along old trade routes and you experience the first harbingers of the Oberharzhe water shelf before you reach the university town of Clausthal-Zellerfeld. Here you can marvel at the largest wooden church in Germany – the Marktkirche zum Heiligen Geist.

From the mountain town you now hike at the same altitude, primarily on forest paths and narrow paths along the fascinating Dammgraben systemems. You pass the Eisenquelle and end in the town of Altenau with its herb park.

Today the highlight of your hiking trip awaits you: the climb to the Brocken in the middle of the core area of the cross-border national park Harz. You climb to the summit on well-developed and varied paths. The route takes you down to Schierke or Wernigerode Harzhe narrow-gauge railway (self-payer). Overnight stay in Schierke or Wernigerode.

Overnight place: Schierke/Wernigerode
If you spend the night in Wernigerode, first use the bus (excl.) to Schierke. On the Pfarrsteig you reach the hiking trail again. Past the Trudenstein with its distant view, you walk downhill to the Königshütte waterfall. Now you come across the Bode river and a new landscape emerges - limestone mining is still being carried out here. Overnight stay in Elbingerode or Hasselfelde.

Overnight place: Rübeland area
Today's companion is the Bode. Sometimes on small paths, sometimes on wide paths and sometimes high above the Wendefurth dam, you follow the course of the river to Altenbrak or Treseburg.
390-485 m ascent - 458-639 m descent
Overnight place: Altenbrak/Treseburg
On the last day you hike through the mythical and legendary Bodetal. The narrow path always leads along the river between towering granite rocks. Your hike ends in the town of Thale, below the famous witches' dance place. You spend the night in Thale or Quedlinburg. You can get to Quedlinburg by bus (incl. in the spa card), train (excl.) or on foot (+ 16 km).
