As casual as it may sound: you never lose sight of the Danube when hiking - and that throughout your hiking holiday! The hiking boots are laced, the rucksack is packed and the sun is shining from the sky. So let it begin. Your path leads you to the gently rolling ridge of the Upper Austrian Danube valley from Passau to Linz. You hike through shady forests, climb the impressive ruins of the Schaunburg and take a well-deserved break at the Schlögener Blick. You will often encounter such fantastic views on your journey. Again and again the new route opens up the breathtaking view of the Danube. And in between, cozy farms invite you to homemade delicacies and home-pressed cider or fruit juice.
Enjoy the short boat trip to Kasten. There you enter the Donausteig and complete your first stage to Engelhartszell. Engelszell Abbey is the only Trappist monastery in Austria and is known for its beautiful rococo church.

The ferry takes you to the northern bank of the Danube. You walk steeply up the "Donauleiten". A magnificent view of the valley opens up from the Penzenstein. It goes over gentle hills to the ruins of Rannariedl. Back down on the Danube you will reach the Wesenufer.

Today you hike up to Marsbach Castle. The wonderful hilly landscape of the Mühlviertel accompanies you right up to the Schlögener Schlinge.
