Provence - the sunny country of France with fertile, lush plains, Mediterranean coast, cultural centers of antiquity and the Middle Ages, fragrant herbs and Provençal way of life. A magnificent cultural landscape that has attracted countless painters such as van Gogh, Gauguin, Picasso, Matisse and Chagall with its unique light and intense colours. In addition to the magnificent and varied landscape, Provence also impresses with its history, art and architecture. Famous buildings such as the Palais des Papes in Avignon (World Heritage), the Roman arenas in Arles and Nîmes and the Pont du Gard (World Heritage) are just as enchanting as the Greco-Roman excavations of Glanum and the medieval town of Les Baux in the Alpilles. The round trip through the Camargue, the protected marshland in the Rhône delta, is another highlight. The famous pink flamingos and the white horses are the landmarks of this landscape, which represents a grandiose contrast to what has been seen so far. And again and again we breathe the life of Provence: hustle and bustle in the cities, colorful markets, Spanish traditions, village life under plane trees and a touch of southern serenity.

Kunstvolle Altstadt in der Provence in Frankreich

Individual arrival in Orange, the city with well-known monuments from Roman times. The grandiose theater and the triumphal arch are historical witnesses from this era. The old town captivates with its Provençal charm with small, pretty shops and cafés.

Overnight place: Orange

The first stage leads to the world-famous wine town of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. A stroll through the town should be planned. You can reach the city of Avignon on bike paths and with almost no traffic. We recommend a stroll through the old town with a visit to the Papal Palace, which has been declared a national heritage site.

Overnight place: Avignon

Today your path first leads you to St. Rémy, perhaps the most beautiful, but certainly one of the most typical little towns in Provence. Under the shady plane trees in the old streets of the old town, the hustle and bustle, the splendor of colors and the abundance of herbal scents can hardly be surpassed. A climb into the Alpilles is rewarded with a great view of Les Baux and compensates for the small effort. Les Baux is also called "City in the Rock" because of the harmonious layout of the place and the ruins of the fortress. Selected small paths and streets lead to Arles. Roman culture and heritage shape the cityscape and history of Arles. Arles was the second most important city of the Roman Empire, but is also the city of Vincent van Gogh.

Overnight place: Arles

Half sea, half land, the Camargue is a unique natural area with brackish water lakes, vast salt steppes, wild horses and the famous pink flamingos. Small streets lead comfortably into the unique natural area. In Méjanes you have the opportunity to admire the untouched nature and, with a little luck, flamingos and wild bulls with a small train. The path leads back to Arles on almost car-free streets.

Overnight place: Overnight stay in Arles like the day before

In the morning we go to the two cities of Tarascon and Beaucaire, separated by the Rhône. Sights of these places are the castles from the 12th century. In Beaucaire, numerous cafes along the canal invite you to take a break. In Nîmes, numerous very well-preserved buildings bear witness to Roman times. Marvel at the Arena, the Maison Carrée or the Tour Magne. But modernity also sets accents, for example with the Carré d'art (cultural center) by Norman Foster.

Overnight place: Nîmes

Tarascon Castle, high above the Rhône, accompanies you a little further through the vineyards of Costières-de-Nimes. Around noon you can already see the Pont-du-Gard, the famous aqueduct from Roman times and also a World Heritage Site. Aromatically scented plants such as lavender, thyme and rosemary are companions in the pretty town of Uzès, which captivates with its magical, medieval charm. The unique arcade-lined marketplace is worth seeing.

Overnight place: Uzes

Today the landscape changes again. Your last stage leads through the hilly landscape of the Garrigue, covered with Kermes oaks and Mediterranean herbs. Later, vineyards and the lovely orchards of Provence dominate again. You cross the Rhône. On the other side of the river you cycle through the southern French town of Caderousse and return to the city of Orange in the afternoon.

After breakfast individual return journey or start of your extension in Orange. Train passengers can reach every train station in Germany with the TGV until the evening.
