Experience three cycle paths in one holiday. From Lübeck along the Alster to Hamburg, then downstream the Elbe and along the North Sea coast to Brunsbüttel, follow the North Sea Coast Cycle Path. We continue on the Kiel Canal route to Kiel. Cycle with large ships that swim high like a multi-story house next to you to the rhythm of the ship's diesel engine. From Kiel you follow the Baltic Sea Coast Cycle Path along the Holstein beaches past the island of Fehmarn back to the Hanseatic city of Lübeck.

Blick auf den Hafen in Neustadt in Holstein

Welcome to the city of marzipan. Lübeck, as the mother of the Wendish Hanseatic cities, has a lot to offer worth seeing about its history. Immerse yourself in the time of the Hanseatic League, the Baltic Sea trade in the Middle Ages.

Overnight place: Lübeck

Through Travetal on tranquil paths to Bad Oldesloe. Continue on an old railway embankment to Sülfeld and through the Alster Valley to the Hanseatic city of Hamburg. If it's a bit too long for you, take the regional train to Bad Oldesloe and "save" around 28 km. In Hamburg you could also use the S-Bahn or U-Bahn (on your own) at any time for the final kilometers. But then you miss the beautiful entrance into the city along the Outer Alster.

Overnight place: Hamburg

Along the banks of the Elbe from Hamburg through Blankenese to Wedel. Through the Elbe marshland protected by dikes via Uetersen to Elmshorn and Glückstadt.

Overnight place: Elmshorn or Glückstadt

The tour along the Elbe leads through the charming little town of Glückstadt to Brunsbüttel. The Kiel Canal begins in Brunsbüttel. In the large lock system you can see some ocean liners.

Overnight place: Brunsbüttel (overnight stay in Brunsbüttel ONLY possible in category 1)

Today you leave the North Sea on your bike tour. Watch the tide ebb and flow for the last time. Cycle along the world's most used man-made waterway on consistently flat terrain. On the Kiel Canal Cycle Path you now always go along the canal via Hochdonn to Rendsburg. The city, which is over 800 years old, is lovely and worth experiencing.

Overnight place: Rendsburg

This stage takes you to the north side of the canal. In Sehestedt you change sides, either through the pedestrian tunnel. Cycle one last time with the ships passing by. We continue past Kiel to Friedrichsort and take the ferry to Laboe (on our own).

Overnight place: Schönberg or the surrounding area

Pretty seaside resorts, wide beaches and stately estates in the hinterland will enchant you on this stage. You cycle along the Hohwachter Bay, which, with its kilometer-long sandy beach and 20 m high cliffs, creates a particularly beautiful landscape. Via Weißenhäuser Strand you cycle to Heiligenhafen not far from the island of Fehmarn.

Overnight place: Heiligenhafen, Grossenbrode or the surrounding area

A short ride takes you to Lübeck Bay, past Dahme and Kellenhausen to Grömitz. Grömitz is one of the oldest and largest seaside resorts. Further south you reach the Holstein Baltic Sea town of Neustadt.

Overnight place: Neustadt or surroundings

You reach Travemünde mostly along the beaches and beach promenades of Haffkrug, Scharbeutz and Timmendorf. There are plenty of swimming opportunities. Cafés, restaurants, boutiques and shops line the beaches in colorful succession. You can shorten the last stage by taking the S-Bahn (under your own direction) from Travemünde to Lübeck. The delivery of the rental bikes (if booked) and the departure from Lübeck are carried out under your own control. Alternatively, we would be happy to book you an additional night in Lübeck.

Overnight place: Lübeck

  • 8 nights in the booked category, including breakfast
  • Luggage transfer from hotel to hotel (9am-18pm)
  • 7 days service hotline
  • 1 x per room extensive travel documents with maps/route description for the tour

Holstein round

The start was in Lübeck, unfortunately only SB-Cycle Path until Bad Oldesloe. Luckily we drove this part on a Sunday morning with little traffic. In HH itself you can almost get to the hotel along the Alster, we had re-planned the route a bit in the last part. Overall, great to drive. On the way from HH to Elmshorn (North Sea Coast Cycle Path) we exclusively preferred the ride along the dike after we had left the MUseumshafen and Blankeneese behind us. Unfortunately the hotel in Elmshorn wasn't that great (Cat. B), but the dinner at the Dorfkrug was very good. Continue to Brunsbüttel along the dike. Big ships waren In short supply in Brunsbüttel and then on the journey on the NOK to Rendsburg. The last part on the NOK Rendsburg to KIel is characterized by diversions on both sides due to the expansion of the canal. It will still take years, but that meant a lot of walking through villages and settlements, which meant a change of direction. Detours are well signposted. In Friedrichsort then take the ferry to Laboe. But you should get the ferry at 14.30:15.09.2023 p.m. in order to get to your next overnight stay in a relaxed manner. Ferry times can be found on the internet, and the winter timetable will apply from September XNUMX, XNUMX. Further on the Baltic Sea cycle path, the museum train station on Schönberger Strand is worth seeing. Unfortunately, the Fehmarn Sound Bridge was closed to pedestrians and cyclists. You can only get to Fehmarn with a shuttle bus, so we had to take a look at the top of the bridge, but there is also a path below the bridge that offers a wonderful view over the Sound. If you like, you can use the ferry from Großenbrode. We continued on the Baltic Sea cycle path to Neustadt. From Neustadt then a bit on the Baltic Sea cycle path, including through the Baltic Sea resorts of Scharbeutz and Timmendorfer Strand. Cycling here wasn't fun at the end of September and it was swarming with people, cars and bikes even though everyone had their own lane. Then be sure to use the shuttle bus through the Herrentunnel to cycle via Gothmund and the subsequent NSG Schellbruch. the path is terribly bad, but the view is fantastic. All in all, a great round that, with a few small exceptions, is great to drive. We liked it.
