Welcome to the city of marzipan. Lübeck, as the mother of the Wendish Hanseatic cities, has a lot to offer worth seeing about its history. Immerse yourself in the time of the Hanseatic League, the Baltic Sea trade in the Middle Ages.

Through Travetal on tranquil paths to Bad Oldesloe. Continue along an old railway embankment to Sülfeld and through the Alster Valley to the Hanseatic City of Hamburg. If that's a bit too long for you, take the regional train to Bad Oldesloe and "save" about 28 km. In Hamburg, you could always take the S-Bahn or U-Bahn (suburban train) for the final few kilometers (at your own expense). However, you'll miss the beautiful entrance to the city along the Outer Alster Lake.

Along the banks of the Elbe from Hamburg through Blankenese to Wedel. Through the Elbe marshland protected by dikes via Uetersen to Elmshorn and Glückstadt.

The tour along the Elbe leads through the charming little town of Glückstadt to Brunsbüttel. The Kiel Canal begins in Brunsbüttel. In the large lock system you can see some ocean liners.

Today you leave the North Sea on your bike tour. Watch the ebb and flow for the last time. Cycle along the world's busiest man-made waterway on consistently flat terrain. The Kiel Canal Cycle Path now always follows the canal via Hochdonn to Rendsburg. The more than 800-year-old city is lovable and worth experiencing.

Overnight stay in Rendsburg

This stage takes you to the north side of the canal. In Sehestedt you change sides, either through the pedestrian tunnel. Race against the passing ships one last time. Continue past Kiel to Friedrichsort and take the ferry to Laboe (at your own expense).

Pretty seaside resorts, wide beaches and stately estates in the hinterland will enchant you on this stage. You cycle along the Hohwachter Bay, which, with its kilometer-long sandy beach and 20 m high cliffs, creates a particularly beautiful landscape. Via Weißenhäuser Strand you cycle to Heiligenhafen not far from the island of Fehmarn.

A short ride takes you to Lübeck Bay, past Dahme and Kellenhausen to Grömitz. Grömitz is one of the oldest and largest seaside resorts. Further south you reach the Holstein Baltic Sea town of Neustadt.

You reach Travemünde mostly along the beaches and beach promenades of Haffkrug, Scharbeutz and Timmendorf. Bathing facilities are plentiful. Cafes, restaurants, boutiques and shops line the beaches in a colorful succession. You can shorten the last stage by taking the S-Bahn (on your own) from Travemünde to Lübeck. The return of the rental bikes (if booked) and the departure from Lübeck is your own responsibility. Alternatively, we would be happy to book you an additional night in Lübeck.

Holstein round

We started in Lübeck, but unfortunately it was only a self-service cycle path up to Bad Oldesloe. Luckily we rode this section on a Sunday morning with little traffic. In Hamburg itself you can get almost to the hotel along the Alster, we had replanned the route a little in the last part. Overall it was great to ride. On the way from Hamburg to Elmshorn (North Sea Cycle Route) we preferred to ride along the dyke after we had left the museum harbor and Blankeneese behind us. Unfortunately the hotel in Elmshorn wasn't that great (category B), but we had a very good dinner in the Dorfkrug. We continued along the dyke to Brunsbüttel. Large ships were in short supply in Brunsbüttel and also on the subsequent journey along the Kiel Canal to Rendsburg. The last part of the Kiel Canal from Rendsburg to Kiel is characterized by diversions on both sides due to the expansion of the canal. It will take years, but it meant that we went through a lot of villages and settlements, which meant variety. Diversions are well signposted. In Friedrichsort, take the ferry to Laboe. You should get the 14.30:15.09.2023 p.m. ferry to get to your next overnight stay in a relaxed manner. Ferry times can be found online; the winter timetable will apply from September , . Continue on the Baltic Sea Cycle Route; the museum station at Schönberger Strand is worth seeing. Unfortunately, the Fehmarnsund Bridge was closed to pedestrians and cyclists; you can only get to Fehmarn by bus shuttle, so we had to look from the top of the bridge, but there is also a path below the bridge that offers a wonderful view over the Sound. If you like, you can then take the ferry from Großenbrode. We continued on the Baltic Sea Cycle Route to Neustadt. From Neustadt, we then continued a bit on the Baltic Sea Cycle Route, through the Baltic Sea resorts of Scharbeutz and Timmendorfer Strand, among others. Cycling here was no fun, at the end of September, and it was teeming with people, cars and bicycles, although everyone has their own lane. Then be sure to use the bus shuttle through the Herrentunnel to cycle via Gothmund and the adjacent Schellbruch nature reserve. The path is awful, but the view is fantastic. All in all, a great route that is easy to cycle, with a few minor exceptions. We really enjoyed it.
