Experience a bike tour the Viking way. From Husum to Schleswig you will cycle from the North Sea coast to the Baltic Sea coast on the old trade routes and along the shipping routes of the Norsemen who took you from the interior to the coasts. Husum, Schleswig, Kappeln, Eckernförde and Rendsburg are stops on your bike tour.

Overview of your benefits
  • Good value for money
  • Tour incl. hotels and luggage transport
  • Extensive route booklet & GPS data
  • Top brand rental bikes bookable
  • More than 30 years of experience

Arrive on your own during the day. Possibly booked rental bikes are ready for you at the arrival hotel. In Husum you will find traces of the poet Theodor Storm.

Overnight place: Husum

Via the Eider-Treene-Sorge path you reach the largest archaeological monument in Northern Europe, the Dannewerk, near Hollingstedt and cycle to the Danevirke of the same name. Schleswig, the city of culture and the Viking Museum Haithabu (under own direction), is soon reached on the banks of the Schlei. In the Viking Age, the most important trade routes met here and it was from here that the Vikings went on raids and traded.

Overnight place: Schleswig or the surrounding area

Today's stage takes you through the old town via the Holm (old historic fishing village) along the northern bank of the Schlei. You cycle on wonderful paths through the gently hilly landscape of Angling via Borderby, Lindaunis to Arnis (Germany's smallest town) to Kappeln.

Overnight place: Kappeln

Your route now takes you along the southern bank of the Schlei via Kopperby, Sieseby to Missunde, just as the Vikings once navigated the Schlei. Continue to Eckernförde, where you meet the Baltic Sea.

Overnight place: Eckernförde

Explore the Kiel Fjord and the state capital Kiel today. Kiel's heart beats on the fjord. Experience the arrival and departure of the ferries to Sweden or Norway or take a trip on the Fjord steamer (own arrangements). You can shorten the journey to or from Kiel yourself.

Overnight place: Like the day before in Eckernförde

Today's stage takes you through the Hüttener Berge nature park to Rendsburg. The highest elevation is the Scheelsberg at 106m not far from Owschlag. Continue to your milestone.

Overnight place: Rendsburg

The journey goes along the Eider through the marshes on dykes and coastal paths to Tönning. The Multimar Wattforum in Tönning provides information about interesting facts about the Wadden Sea (in-house). Bird-rich salt marshes along the Haubarge characterize the Eiderstedt peninsula. You cross the North Sea Coast Cycle Path and cycle to the Gray City by the Sea in Husum.

Overnight place: Husum

After breakfast, you will travel home on your own or with an extension.

Overnight place: Husum (departure)

In the footsteps of the Vikings and others

The bike tour with your own wheels started and ended in Husum in a very nice hotel/hotel at the castle park. This was about 10 minutes from the port, the actual center away. And since the hotel didn't have a restaurant, we went there for dinner. The selection was more than sufficient and for every taste. The maritime museum there is also recommended, small but nice. For the first day of cycling we bought provisions at the supermarket near the hotel. What luck! The inn in Dannewerk mentioned in the travel guide was also closed during the day, like almost all the inns mentioned. This should be revised! The hotel in Schleswig was great/ Waldschlösschen, absolutely! We had chosen the more expensive category. Unfortunately the hotel was a bit outside of Schleswig, but had a very good restaurant. And swimming pool and sauna waren a compensation. After Kappeln in the rain, the hotel/city of Kappeln again had no restaurant. If you arrive soaked, you don't want to go out again in the evening. As a consolation we could have used the sauna. Eckernförde, again a hotel/ Seelust outside of the city without a restaurant. The view of the Baltic Sea from the room was very limited by a garden sauna with a fence - and we didn't feel like the neighboring Chinese. Off to Rendsburg. Here ubns sent the travel guide in derision to the left, but right was correct, or the road was described very ambiguous. We weren't the only ones wandering around! Luckily noticed in time. Hotel Covent Garden was huge, nice room with canal view. We decided not to eat here because we had eaten really well on the canal. On to Friedrichstadt, where we moved into a pension, Marktblick, with a price reduction due to our late booking. Great, right on the market, the suite, all restaurants within sight. And we did the Treene trip as soon as we arrived, because at 15:30 p.m. the boating was over, no matter what the internet says about it. Was worth it! This pension beat some hotels for comfort! The bike tour was really nice except for the one rainy day, which we got over. It would be very helpful to have information about the kilometers between the individual sections in order to be able to orientate yourself better.

A nice bike tour

A bike tour with lots of sea, fjord, river, canal, lake and dyke views. The cycle paths are well developed and easy to drive with little traffic.

Great tour and very nice route

As always, very good service when booking the trip and very well organized, especially the route description. A tip for choosing a bike: It is best to ride the route on a trekking bike, especially through the Hüttener mountains. Now review hotels. I didn't really like one thing: the hotel Försterhaus = loose skirting boards with nails! Risk of injury! and the service overloaded. I had to visit them myself to pay for my dinner. I was asked on arrival to eat before 20pm if possible as they are expecting a larger group. Had dinner at 19 p.m. and still got my food. At 19:30 p.m. the bus group came and then we went around. As a guest, I expect not to notice the stress of the crew and that no guests are served differently than others, regardless of whether they are traveling in a group by bus or traveling alone. I slept in the annex with construction workers. Because of a night not so wild but cleanliness and security there is no mercy. The whole system makes an impression as if they would be on the verge of bankruptcy. The other Meck bike tourers also had this impression. When I was back in Husum, her employee told me that the outbuilding was actually intended for employees... The best was Thomsen's motel with a very well stocked minibar and Hotel Herzog with a very beautiful courtyard and beautiful furnishings - everything made "old". . All other hotels are good to very good average. The breakfast was always very good, no drawbacks. Two hotels deserve special mention here: Heldts Hotel (scrambled eggs with bacon freshly served, etc.) and Hotel Herzog (old coffee pots, etc. like grandmother's and candlelight). The 2 additional Nights in Fahrdorf and Husum were worth it. The Viking Museum was very informative and well done. 2 m from the hotel there is a beautiful small beach with shower, playground and toilet facilities. why not mentioned in the tour description. Went there after visiting the museum. On the last day in Husum I did a tour to the island of Nordstrand (round trip about 600 km). Very nice and you can see the Watt and many sheep. That could be the 64st day or include the last day of the tour as an additional offer. Otherwise I had very nice, relaxing days and the right cycling weather in contrast to the temperatures of the last few days here in the Ore Mountains.

Questionnaire online

Super organized trip, unfortunately the weather wasn't so nice, but nobody can do anything about that. I would do it again anytime and have already recommended it. As an improvement, I would edit the itinerary description and shorten it to essential detail.

Recommended circular tour

A week on tour with your own e-bike: everyday life is forgotten! The weather is of course crucial for a bike tour - lucky. We liked the route. We got to know a bit of Germany and we think it's definitely worth it. We have changed some routes (from Kappeln to Eckernförde along the Baltic Sea coast - very nice tour). On the last day after Husum we rode stretches along the dike. The luggage transport worked perfectly!!! At this point, thanks to those who reliably brought our heavy bags to the place on a daily basis!!! The accommodations waren good. Only the hotel in Schleswig didn't work at all. For the A category, it disappointed us on all counts (a small room with a plush blue carpet and worn furniture - overall the hotel felt completely "tired"). Overall: recommended to book this tour.

well organized bike tour

We really liked it. The daily itineraries waren great put together. The hotels, including breakfast, have met our expectations. Special mention should be made of the hotel in Husum, the breakfast buffet "super tasty". The hotel staff all friendly. Since we traveled individually and had our own bikes with us, we can of course not rate the bike quality and travel support. We would recommend you as a tour operator at any time and would also be happy to plan a trip with you again.

Nice tour with compromises in accommodation

Overall, we liked the tour, even if the weather gods weren't kind to us. The Schlei in particular is beautiful and varied. The stage locations also have something to offer for many tastes. It's just a pity that we lived outside of Schleswig, we would have liked to have spent more time there (but the hotel in Fahrdorf was good). In the hotel list, the Hotel Herzog Friedrich in Friedrichstadt unfortunately stands out extremely negatively (we cannot understand one of the earlier reviews). Unfortunately, a beautiful garden/courtyard and vintage ambience cannot make up for a rundown and unclean room. A torn carpet with obvious folds and many stains awaited us (walking barefoot is not recommended), stained curtains and wallpaper, etc. We first collected various "roommates" and their nets. Apparently the room hadn't been cleaned beforehand. Storage options for the bikes: none (!). The list could go on, but it should suffice here. Please remove this house from the list!!! The accommodations are therefore only three stars. On the other hand, we really liked the Hotel Am Schlosspark in Husum, where we spent two additional nights. Suggestion for the route of the tour: the last stage back to Husum criss-crossed a largely unchanged landscape (although it is only 14 km from Friedrichstadt to Husum). Alternatively, maybe install Nordstrand?

Anonymous online review from 28.06.2022

The trip was great - maybe with the exception of the Hotel Stadt Kappeln. We recommend a tide calendar: high water in the entire bathroom after the shower, storm surge if the room is occupied by 2 showering people :-) The bicycles waren in very good condition, but we had a deja vu: the chain was (much) too loose on the E.191, the computer on the E.104 was fine, but the display was defective and not waterproof - just like the last two bikes September. Perhaps waren it the same wheels? We are already considering which tour we will book with you next.

Map material and digital routing waren very good! Unfortunately, lugging the luggage to the 2nd floor of several hotels was very difficult.
