They have their very own flair, their own character, the East Frisian Islands in the North Sea. All are shaped by the vastness of the sea, the waves and beaches, and yet Borkum, Norderney and Langeoog form worlds of their own. A high-seas climate awaits you on Borkum, for example, Norderney is sophisticated, and Langeoog is almost completely car-free. The coast of East Frisia, on the other hand, has charms: the old chieftain's seat of Aurich or the picturesque fishing village of Greetsiel. Rough is the charm of the north, rough and hearty.

For two hours your way leads across the sea before you reach Borkum, the largest East Frisian island. Once a refuge for pirates, later shaped by whaling, travelers are now conquering the island. Explore the landscapes of Borkum on the 130 km long network of cycle paths. Or maybe you prefer a day of swimming on the 26-kilometre-long sandy beach before returning to Emden?

You cycle to the romantic fishing village of Greetsiel, the largest shrimp boat port in the WeserEms-Region. Take a short break before the journey continues north past the Leybucht, where you may be lucky enough to spot seals.
Overnight place: North or surrounding areas
Otto von Bismarck and Heinrich Heine were guests on Norderney; today the oldest seaside resort on the East Frisian Islands welcomes you for a bike ride past the lighthouse in the middle of the island, mills and gullies. A walk along the beach would be an attractive alternative. Norderney's sandy beach is 14 kilometers long in total.

Chiefs' castles and East Friesland's most beautiful moated castle in Dornum line your route today before you cross over to Langeoog to stay two nights on the car-free island. Note: On Langeoog there is sometimes no covered parking for your bicycles.
Overnight place: Langeoog Island
Traffic jams, exhaust fumes, honking - none of that exists on the car-free island of Langeoog, formerly the home of singer Lale Andersen (Lili Marleen). Instead, sand dunes more than 20 meters high, fresh sea air and ... of course plenty of opportunity for cycling, sunbathing and walking on the beach.

The ferry takes you back to the mainland. From Bensersiel you cycle to Aurich, the old capital of East Friesland. Next follow the meanders of the Ems-Jade Channel. Your journey will take you to Emden with almost no cars.
