Luther Trail Mühlhausen – Eisenach

This morning you still have time to see the medieval town of Mühlhausen. You continue hiking on the “Hainichlandweg” circular hiking trail. This takes you to the Plänterwald and further across orchards, past huge sequoia trees in the Mühlhausen city forest. The highlights of today are definitely the Taternkreuz and the Lehdeborn as well as the Mühlhäuser Landgraben. The latter is a unique, medieval building. The Mühlhäuser Landgraben is 26 km long and was originally a rampart that stretched from the Mühlhäuser Hardt to the Güldener Holz in northern Hainich. You reach Struth, the highest settlement in the district, and here you have the opportunity to stop off.

On your further route is the Zella Monastery, the prioress felt connected to Luther's teachings during the Reformation. On your way through the Hainich National Park you reach the town of Treffurt. Here you can see Normannstein Castle, a medieval, predominantly Romanesque castle complex from the 11th century. It was built as a lookout to protect the three fords that ran through the Werra and gave the city its name.

On green, romantic paths you leave Treffurt through the Hainich National Park with its unique, pristine nature. Experience one of the oldest and most beautiful villages in the region, Frankenroda. Today's destination is the town of Creuzburg. The castle of the same name was a popular place of residence for Saint Elisabeth, who lived here from 1223 to 1228 and gave birth to her two children Hermann and Gertrud. Be sure to visit the beautiful Werra Bridge, built in 1223 - an architectural gem!

Today you hike to the Wartburg town of Eisenach, come along the Werra to the Wilhelmsglücksbrunn monastery with a café and farm shop and can experience the picturesque Werra meadows and the unique nature. In Eisenach, Martin Luther preached in the Georgenkirche, which made the Georgenkirche one of the first Protestant churches in Germany. The Eisenach-born composer Johann Sebastian Bach was baptized in the Georgenkirche and Georg Philipp Telemann played as organist in the Georgenkirche from 1708-12. Today the Georgenkirche is the Evangelical Lutheran Episcopal Church of Thuringia.
