A beautiful cycle route takes you along the first vineyards through the Volkacher Mainloop into the heart of the Franconian wine country. Sommerach awaits you with baroque town houses, half-timbered wineries and the Winzerkeller, the oldest wine cooperative in Franconia. Look forward to the “Kostbar” with wine advice, wine sales and wine bars, to the “summer bar” to relax and to the wine school – the only school where drinking wine is not only allowed, but mandatory.
Overnight stay: Sommerach
Already in Dettelbach there is a worthwhile break in the old town with the almost completely preserved city wall, many small towers, cobblestone streets and picturesque rows of houses. As soon as you are in the saddle, Kitzingen awaits you with its historic market square and the Renaissance town hall. Via Marktbreit with a beautiful ensemble Maingate and Malerwinkelhaus you cycle to Ochsenfurt. Look forward to Sommerhausen, a Franconian wine village straight out of a picture book. You spend the night with the winemaker, look over his shoulder as he works, marvel at his wine cellar and taste his fine wines.
Overnight location: Ochsenfurt/Sommerhausen
Let yourself be inspired today by the romantic townscape of Eibelstadt, whose city wall encloses many sights. You cycle through Randersacker, where wine has been grown since 779 AD. The cycle path leads along famous vineyards such as Teufelskeller, Marsberg and Sonnenstuhl to Würzburg. Marvel at the market square, the town hall, the old one Mainbridge, the Lady Chapel with sandstone figures and the prince-bishop's residence. You then cycle via Veitshöchheim with its summer residence and French rococo garden to Thüngersheim, where exquisite specialties such as Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc and Rieslaner are grown. Visit the modern wine shop and see for yourself the skills of the people of Thüngersheim before cycling on to Karlstadt.
Overnight stay: Karlstadt
The landscape now changes dramatically, with the characteristic vineyards giving way to shady forests right next to the cycle path. It's only a 10-minute ride (Karlstadt - Gemünden) or a 25-minute ride (Karlstadt - Lohr) by train. MainYou can shorten today's stage by taking the valley railway, to approximately 28 or 42 km. Whichever route you choose, Lohr will welcome you with the charm of its fairytale old town. Visit the Spessart Museum in the old castle or the small school museum. Approximately 28 idyllic kilometers of cycling await you afterward. The beautiful cycle path runs directly along the river, passing through Marktheidenfeld with its noteworthy parish church and the Franck House (built in 1745 by the wealthy wine merchant Franz Valentin Franck). Look forward to the romantic wine village of Homburg and the vineyards that once again grace the landscape. With its excellent vineyard sites "Edelfrau" and "Kallmuth," Homburg's winemakers produce top-quality Franconian wines: earthy, fiery, and with a delicate almond flavor.
Overnight location: Marktheidenfeld/Homburg
The wooded hills, through which the Main The route winds its way through the Main River. Passing Wertheim with its charming half-timbered houses and winding old town, you cycle mostly right along the riverbank, enjoying unspoiled nature. Only near Bürgstadt will you encounter vineyards again, where mostly red grapes are now ripening. Bürgstadt is known for its excellent wine, perhaps precisely because viticulture here is still practiced with the passion of the private winemaker. With almost 75 hectares of vineyards, Bürgstadt is one of the largest wine-growing villages on the Lower Main. Look forward to a pretty, lively wine village, delicious treats in the traditional wine taverns, the Red Wine Trail, and St. Martin's Chapel with its unique interior paintings.
Overnight stay: Bürgstadt
Just a stone's throw and you are in Miltenberg with its wonderful market square and pretty half-timbered houses before you cycle parallel to the red wine hiking trail to Großheubach. Here the vines grow predominantly on steep red sandstone terraces, the basis for the noble red grape varieties Blauer Spätburgunder, Frühburgunder, Portugieser and St. Laurent. On flat paths you roll quickly over Klingenberg, where excellent red wines are also grown, to the Johannisburg sandstone castle in Aschaffenburg.
