The North Sea Coast Cycle Route in Schleswig-Holstein takes you from the cosmopolitan city of Hamburg along Germany's largest national park, the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea, to Husum. In Husum you leave the North Sea coast and cross the country towards the Schlei to Schleswig. Then follow the Schlei to Kappeln to the Baltic Sea and follow the Baltic Sea coast to the Flensburg Fjord up to Flensburg. In terms of landscape, the route can be divided into three areas. Cross the rural region of Dithmarschen north of Hamburg to Büsum. Experience the North Sea coast between Büsum and Husum. Then the inland around Schleswig and the Schlei region and with the last stage of your tour the Baltic Sea coast in northern Germany with the destination Flensburg.

Overnight place: Hamburg

Along the banks of the Elbe from Hamburg through Blankenese to Wedel. Through the Elbe marshland protected by dikes via Uetersen to Elmshorn and Glückstadt.

The tour along the Elbe leads through the charming little town of Glückstadt to Brunsbüttel. The Kiel Canal begins in Brunsbüttel. In the large lock system you can see some ocean liners.

The Wadden Sea soon opens up behind the dikes. Through the expanses of the Dithmarscher Land, it goes to Friedrichskoog with its unique seal station. Enjoy a delicious shrimp roll in the harbor before continuing to Büsum.

Overnight place: Busum or the surrounding area

Before you leave, you should visit the storm surge adventure world "Blanker Hans" (on your own). Further along the way is the Eidersperre and Tönning with its Multimar-Wattforum (own management). Either via St. Peter Ording or directly to Husum.

Via the Eider-Treene-Sorge path you reach the largest archaeological monument in Northern Europe, the Danewerk, near Hollingstedt and cycle to the Danevirke of the same name. Schleswig, the city of culture and the Viking Museum Haithabu (own management) on the banks of the Schlei is soon reached. In the Viking Age, the most important trade routes met here and it was from here that the Vikings went on raids and traded.

Today's stage takes you through the old town via the Holm (old historic fishing village) along the northern bank of the Schlei. You cycle on wonderful paths through the gently hilly landscape of Angling via Borderby, Lindaunis to Arnis (Germany's smallest town) to Kappeln.

You leave Kappeln and the area of ​​the Slime Estuary and cycle up to the Gelting Bay. The Flensburg Fjord is soon reached. A highlight on the way to Flensburg is the “Glücksburg” moated castle. The last part of the journey from Glücksburg can also be covered on a pleasure boat to Flensburg on your own.
