In 2024, the university and Hanseatic city of Greifswald will celebrate a big and significant anniversary:
The 250th birthday of Caspar David Friedrich. The painter, who shaped Romantic art in Germany like no other, was born on September 5, 1774 in Greifswald. ...

To this day, Caspar David Friedrich fascinates people who encounter his life and work in the museum and artists who receive and interpret his works. His importance for art and cultural history can hardly be overestimated - he is undoubtedly one of the internationally best-known German painters. He is also considered a pioneer of modernism and is one of the most important representatives of romanticism in the world. But Friedrich was not only modern as a painter and color virtuoso, his understanding of nature and sensitive handling of his environment also have an impact on art and society to this day.

Blick auf den Leuchtturm Dornbusch auf Hiddensee

On their own. The old Hanseatic city is the gateway to the island Rügen. Impressively connects the new Rügenbridge, next to the old one Rügendam, the mainland with the island. During his travels to the island Rügen Caspar David Friedrich liked to sketch various sailing boats in the harbor of Stralsund.

Overnight place: Stralsund

In the morning by ship (incl.) to Hiddensee. In the afternoon further with the ferry to Rügen and maybe a short bike ride to Cape Arkona. Caspar David Friedrich drew there and in the small fishing village of Vitt. He executed the view of Arkona in various versions and depicted it in many drawings and cuttlefish.

Overnight place: Trent, Bohlendorf, Wiek, Breege, Juliusruh or the surrounding area.

Via the long Schaabe beach you reach the Jasmund peninsula with the famous chalk cliffs. Visit the Königsstuhl National Park Center (on your own) before whizzing down the valley to Sassnitz. The untouched nature of the chalk coast RügenIt was a place of inspiration for Caspar David Friedrich. In addition to various sketches, his famous painting “Chalk Cliffs on” was created in 1818 Rügen".

Overnight place: Sassnitz or the surrounding area

Putbus, the white city Rügens, looks forward to your visit. The city of Putbus was founded in 1810 by Wilhelm Malte I, Prince of Putbus, who had his home town expanded into a planned city in the classicist style so that the city ensemble matched the castle and castle park. Along the route, we recommend a detour to the Mönchgut peninsula, which has deep bays, cliffs and fine sandy beaches and, in its entirety, its original character Rügens reflects. Caspar David Friedrich also explored the peninsula on foot during his time. Göhren's southern beach served as a model for his painting “Monk by the Sea”.

Overnight place: Putbus or Lauterbach

From Putbus you drive to the south of the island and leave there Rügen via the Glewitz ferry (incl.). Once we arrive in Stahlbrode, we head towards Caspar David Friedrich's birthplace: Greifswald. A visit to the old town, its churches, the evidence of the Swedish era and the Caspar David Friedrich Center as well as the picture trail is worth it. On the occasion of the anniversary, the Pomeranian State Museum is dedicating three consecutive special exhibitions to the world-famous painter, featuring extensive collections from the house and high-quality loans from national and international museums.

Overnight place: Greifswald or the surrounding area

The path leads past the Eldena monastery ruins to the island Usedom. In the small village of Ludwigsburg, a castle was built in 1592, which, despite its baroque remodeling, can still be recognized as a Renaissance building and is now one of the last remaining buildings of the Dukes of Pomerania-Wolgast. Ludwigsburg Castle is the birthplace of Friedrich August von Klinkowström, a friend and companion of the painters Caspar David Friedrich and Philipp Otto Runge, and is considered a meeting place for these three representatives of North German Romanticism. From Freest it is possible to take the ferry (under your own direction) to Peenemünde. You cycle along quiet paths across the island to the lake side.

Overnight place: Wolgast, Karlshagen, Zinnowitz or the surrounding area.

After breakfast, hand over the rental bikes and travel home on your own or with an extension. Before you leave, however, we recommend a trip to the ducal and romantic town on the Peenestrom, Wolgast. Philipp Otto Runge, probably the city's best-known son, was born here and is considered the most versatile of the early romantic artists. Both Caspar David Friedrich and Philipp Otto Runge drew at Wolgast harbor. The Rungehaus Museum in Wolgast is Runge's birthplace and now houses an information center about his life and work.
