After breakfast, you will be driven to Mosteiró to begin your Portuguese Camino de Santiago. This also avoids the busy roads and shortens the first stage to 17 km instead of almost 35 km.
Notice the gradual transition from urban to rural areas as you progress through this first phase. You'll walk through Vilarinho and cross the medieval bridge over the Ave before reaching the village of Arcos, where the first stage ends.
Accommodation location: Arcos
Start in Arcos and head towards the ancient village of São Pedro de Rates and its imposing Romanesque church. Pass through the villages of Courel and Pedra Furada, then follow country roads until you reach the attractive town of Barcelos.
Overnight stay: Barcelos
From Barcelos, you hike along smaller roads that lead you into a more rural area. Here you'll see small-scale farming practices and meet some villagers. The trail continues through the small villages of Tamel and Aboim towards the Neiva River and a medieval bridge just before the village of Balugães.
Overnight stay: Balugães
This is a day filled with country roads and stunning scenery, culminating in your spectacular arrival in the picturesque town of Ponte de Lima. Plan your walk so you have ample opportunity to enjoy the historic center and gardens, or simply relax by the river.
Overnight location: Ponte de Lima
You leave the medieval town of Ponte de Lima and return to the rural region. Midway through this stage, you'll encounter Mount Labruja. The 2 km ascent is the most challenging of the entire Portuguese Way, but the views are well worth the effort. Once you've crested the hill, the rest of the stage is an easy walk.
Accommodation location: Cossourado
This day begins with leaving the Coura River valley and gently ascending to São Bento da Porta Aberta. Continue through fields and scrubland to Fontoura until you reach the fortified town of Valença do Minho.
Overnight location: Valença do Minho
Cross the Minho River into Spain. Stroll through the streets of the medieval town of Tui. From Tui, follow the Louro Valley, walk along a forest path, and cross a stone bridge into a wetland where you should be able to spot many bird species. Continue on through the town of O Porriño with its magnificent Gothic town hall.
Overnight stay: Porriño
Leave Porriño and walk through the Chan das Pipas forest. You will pass Redondela, where the central and coastal roads merge.
Finish this leg in Arcade, a small town known for its oysters.
Accommodation: Arcade
This stage is one of the shortest and most beautiful sections. When you arrive in Pontevedra , don't miss the historic city center with its many tapas bars.
Overnight stay: Pontevedra
Leave Pontevedra through the pleasant countryside. This leg to Caldas de Reis is quite long, but not difficult. Rest your tired feet in the thermal springs of Caldas de Reis.
Overnight stay: Caldas de Reis
The Camino de Santiago is almost over. You leave Caldas de Reis and the path leads up a gentle climb to the charming Valga forests. On the way to Padrón, you will see many churches and stone crosses.
Accommodation location: Padrón
This is your final stage. The pilgrimage takes you mostly through rural areas. The last part of this stage is the most challenging. After an intense hike, you'll enter the ancient city of Santiago de Compostela and enjoy the end of your journey at the cathedral.
Overnight stay: Santiago de Compostela
After breakfast, prepare for your departure. If you have some time left, you should explore the old town of Santiago de Compostela.
