At the same time, you can explore the beautiful (and flat) Dutch countryside by bicycle, including the water-rich province of Zeeland and the Scheldt river landscape in West Flanders.
Along the route, you'll pass through many idyllic villages, visit local attractions, and enjoy the comforts of your "floating hotel." Highlights include the Dutch capital, Amsterdam, a visit to a traditional cheese farm, the 19 windmills of Kinderdijk, and the world-famous cities of Antwerp, Ghent, and Bruges in the Belgian province of West Flanders. You'll also discover the Dutch province of Zeeland, essentially a large river delta formed by the Rhine, Meuse, and Scheldt rivers, known for its beautiful beaches, diverse water sports, and the "Delta Project." Belgian Flanders, on the other hand, captivates visitors with its medieval cities, stunning river landscapes, and enjoys a worldwide reputation for its excellent cuisine. In addition to cycling through numerous picturesque villages, you will:
Embarkation and check-in is at 14 pm, where the crew will welcome you aboard in Amsterdam city center. At 14:30 pm, the ship departs from Amsterdam to Utrecht, a charming city. From there, you can take a first test cruise through the Utrecht area.
During breakfast, the ship sails to Vreeswijk, where your cycling tour begins. Cycle along winding rivers, picturesque villages, and historic locks, enjoying the peaceful nature and the Dutch countryside. Later, you'll continue cycling along the Lek River, then cross the Alblasserwaard polder and reach Kinderdijk, undoubtedly the highlight of the day. Kinderdijk is famous for its impressive row of 19 windmills and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site; you can visit one of these windmills, so don't forget your camera! The final leg of your journey is by "Waterbus": in about 10 minutes, you'll travel from Alblasserdam (near Kinderdijk) to Dordrecht, one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands.
During breakfast, the ship sails to WillemsTad, where you will set off on your next bike tour. Your ride takes you to Tholen, once an island in the middle of the large rivers of the province of Zeeland, which was often flooded. Today Tholen is connected to the mainland, but is still a picturesque town. Afterwards, you will cycle on to the destination of this trip, Bergen op Zoom. Bergen op Zoom is a historic fortified town that once stood on the open waters of the Oosterschelde estuary. After dinner, you can take a stroll through the old town. Narrow streets, old town squares, market squares, church squares, and quirky monumental buildings reveal the history of a rich and eventful past that stretches back more than eight hundred years.
In the morning, you'll enjoy a short bike ride through the beautiful Wouwse Plantation around Bergen op Zoom. In the early afternoon, you'll reboard the ship and continue your journey through the impressive Kreekrak Locks to Belgium, to the port city of Antwerp. The city is considered the world capital of the diamond trade and offers countless sights, including the City Hall, one of the many magnificent Renaissance buildings, the historic Grote Markt square, the Cathedral of Our Lady, and the medieval stone castle. You can arrange your own dinner this evening in the city (restaurant recommendations and tips will be provided on board).
In the morning, you'll cycle along a beautiful route out of Antwerp, following the picturesque tidal Scheldt river to St. Amands, where you'll spend the night. The landscape around the Scheldt can be described in just one word: breathtaking! Without a doubt, this part of the tour is one of the natural highlights.
Today you continue your journey along the Scheldt River and cycle to Ghent, where the ship docks for the night in Merelbeke, a suburb of Ghent. Ghent is a beautiful university city with a rich history. Located at the confluence of the Leie and Scheldt rivers, it has been an extremely important trading port since Roman times. It boasts a magnificent opera house, 18 museums, over 100 churches, and more than 400 historic buildings. The main attractions include St. Bavo's Cathedral, home to several masterpieces of medieval art, most notably the world-famous "Adoration of the Lamb of God" by Jan Eyck, and the 95-meter-high Belfry, a former watchtower that, as one of three medieval towers, dominates the old town. Before dinner, you can take a guided canal cruise through the historic city.
Today you'll cycle through the enchanting Flemish countryside of West Flanders to Bruges, also known as the "Venice of the North." This city attracts more than two million visitors annually, who are captivated by its cultural charm. As a unique example of a medieval settlement, Bruges has managed to preserve its historic buildings alongside the city's development over the centuries. As a result, the Gothic architecture blends seamlessly into the cityscape and forms an integral part of its identity. While you're here, there's plenty to do. You can visit one of the many museums or simply relax and soak up the atmosphere of this unique and unforgettable city with a coffee at one of the many inviting street cafés.
End of your journey. Disembarkation after breakfast, until 9:30 a.m.
