During this wonderful sailing and cycling tour on the tall ship Mare-Frisium, you will discover beautiful cities, small villages, and islands around and in the Øresund – the strait between Denmark and Sweden. The narrow Øresund is an ancient trade route, like the Strait of Gibraltar and the Bosporus, a waterway of great strategic and economic importance for centuries. Charming old harbors and fortified towns line its shores. The journey begins in Copenhagen and ends in Malmö: two of the most bicycle-friendly cities in Europe.

Embarkation and check-in on board. The crew will welcome you from 17:30 pm onwards on the ship, which is docked near the city center, opposite the opera house. After you have taken your luggage to your cabin, the captain, tour guides, and crew will invite you for a welcome drink. Afterwards, your first dinner on board will take place. Following dinner, the tour guides will discuss the itinerary, and you will learn everything about the ship and the onboard safety procedures. Bicycles will be distributed in the evening or the following morning.

You disembark the ship and cycle past the Little Mermaid and the Kastellet on quiet cycle paths out of the city, along the Øresund Sound, but also inland through forest areas and beautiful villages. You may even see the ship sailing. About 10 km from Helsingør, the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art is worth a visit. The journey continues to Helsingør, where you reach the historic city center. The harbor is dominated by the imposing
Kronborg Castle dominates, the place Shakespeare had in mind when he wrote Hamlet. Nearby, old harbor buildings have been beautifully restored and house, among other things, a street market and a maritime museum.

After breakfast, you'll cycle along the Danish Riviera coast with its expansive sandy beaches to the small harbor of Hornbæk. Then, the route heads inland through gently rolling hills to Esrum, where you'll stop at the medieval monastery on Lake Esrum. Afterwards, you'll cycle through idyllic wheat fields, past several castles and country houses, back to Helsingør, where a long descent will bring you to the historic city center. A shorter version of the cycling tour allows you to visit Helsingør in the afternoon. During dinner, the ship will cross the narrow strait to reach Helsingborg on the Swedish coast. Helsingborg is a beautiful old city, also considered one of the most innovative in Europe. After dinner, you can take a short walk.

In the morning, you'll cycle along the coast of Skåne (Scania) province to the fortified town of Landskrona. Along the way, you'll pass several beaches and the former fishing village of Borstahusen with its picturesque old fishermen's cottages. Landskrona's 16th-century citadel is still almost completely intact. Shortly after midday, you'll take the ferry to the island of Ven. Explore this tiny island (only 7,5 km²) with fewer than 400 inhabitants, a little gem in the Öresund strait. You can cycle around the island and visit artists, goldsmiths, cafés, the whiskey distillery, or the 16th-century observatory of astronomer Tycho Brahe. As the harbor is too small for the large ship, the crew will pick you up in the late afternoon by dinghy, and the ship will remain anchored offshore overnight.

Today, you and your bikes will stay on board. The ship will sail (under sail, weather permitting) from Ven, passing under the Øresund Bridge, to the southern part of Zealand. Enjoy the sailing trip on the deck of the large sailing ship. Your destination is Køge, or you can sail a little further to Rødvig. The exact destination depends on the weather conditions. In Køge, the ship will dock in the harbor, and in Rødvig, it will anchor for the night. Between the two towns lie the imposing white limestone cliffs of Stevns Klint, similar to those in Dover or on the German island of RügenThis sparsely populated area is considered a "dark sky area": on clear nights, the starry sky, once essential for navigation at sea, can be wonderfully observed.

If your cycling tour starts in Rødvig, you will be transferred from the ship to Rødvig by dinghy. Cycle to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Stevns Klint, where you will make a short stop to visit the chalk cliffs, the small town of Højerup, and the Cliff Church. Continue to Køge and take some time to explore the historic center of the medieval town. If your tour starts in Køge, your cycling tour will be longer. You will also visit the chalk cliffs of Stevns Klint and then return to Køge. The ship will pick you up in Køge for an evening cruise to Malmö.

The short half-day tour takes you past various highlights in the city center and through Malmö's outskirts to a breathtaking view of the Öresund Bridge and the city. In the afternoon, you'll have time to explore Malmö on your own. The longer, full-day tour on quiet country roads leads you to the vibrant university town of Lund, one of Sweden's oldest cities with over 1000 years of history. Discover the historic city center and magnificent 12th-century cathedral. On the way back to the ship, you'll cycle along the beautiful coastline, where you'll have the opportunity to enjoy an ice cream or take one last dip in the sea! In the evening, enjoy the captain's farewell dinner.

Now your journey is over, but we won't let you leave on an empty stomach. Before you disembark at 9:30 a.m., enjoy a delicious breakfast and say goodbye. Malmö train station is just around the corner: from here you can take a train to the airport or Copenhagen city center.

The Mare Frisium – named after the historical "Mare Frisium," the former name for the North Sea along Friesland – is a classic three-masted schooner, first launched in 1916. Originally used as a herring fisherman in the North Sea, the ship later served as a coastal freighter between Scandinavia and England during and after the Second World War.

In 1995, the Mare Frisium underwent extensive restoration and was converted into a comfortable passenger ship. Today, it combines authentic maritime charm with modern comforts and offers its guests a unique sailing experience.

Description of the cabins
The Mare Frisium has 10 compact but comfortable guest cabins on the lower deck. Each cabin is equipped with bunk beds, a sink, storage space, heating, and a private bathroom with shower and toilet. Some cabins also have a small skylight or porthole in the ceiling (which cannot be opened).

Description of the ship
The lower deck features two stylish and comfortable lounges with seating areas, including one with a bar. The spacious sun deck offers ample outdoor seating – ideal for enjoying a drink while watching the scenery go by.

Weather permitting, the crew enthusiastically hoists the sails and switches off the engine to create a true sailing experience. Guests are warmly invited to actively participate in the sailing. With an impressive sail area of 634 m², every trip on the Mare Frisium becomes an unforgettable experience.

The ship – your floating hotel

Between bike rides, you'll travel on a large sailing ship that sails to a new destination each day. You'll dine, sleep, and have breakfast on board. You can prepare your own packed lunch each day, and one or two scenic, pre-planned cycling routes will be offered. Touring bikes and e-bikes are available for rent on board. If you'd like to take a day off from cycling, you can stay on board and sail with the ship. If you wish, you can also help with navigation and hoisting the sails – under the guidance of the experienced crew, of course: no sailing experience is necessary. Or you can simply relax and enjoy the views from the ship.

What makes the tours on the Mare-Frisium special is that at certain points, the crew will take you ashore and pick you up again using a dinghy (a motorized open tender) – depending on whether the ship's draft is too deep to dock in the harbor, in which case it anchors off the coast. The crew ensures your safety, of course, but it's also a bit exciting. On this particular trip, this happens near the island of Ven and at Rødvig.

Guided cycling

Accompanied by two experienced tour guides, you and the group will visit interesting places and sights on daily bike tours. During briefings and along the way, you'll learn everything you need to know about the route and the points of interest. With the free Ride With GPS navigation app and our detailed cycling map (available on board), you can also cycle the tours independently and at your own pace. The bike tours on this trip are not long in themselves, but they do include some elevation changes: some short sections can be more challenging, and some short stretches are on partially paved gravel roads. Therefore, we have rated this tour as a level 3 difficulty. Of course, the tour is somewhat less strenuous with an e-bike.

What is so special about a sailing and cycling trip at sea?

Weather conditions play a crucial role in all sailing trips. However, the safety and comfort of passengers and crew always take precedence. Wind direction and strength, as well as waves and sea state, determine how fast and on which course the ship can sail to the next destination. For this reason, it is never possible to predict exactly how long a particular sailing leg will take. Therefore, on a sailing and cycling tour at sea, the individual stages may be sailed in a different order depending on the weather forecast. The captain may also decide to change or skip a destination and replace it with another. So, rest assured that you are in the hands of a competent and experienced crew during such a trip, but also expect a touch of adventure.

Good to know

  • On some days, you can choose between a longer and a shorter bike tour. Please note that the shorter bike tour may not include all of the highlights mentioned.
  • If you prefer not to cycle one day, you are welcome to stay on board and relax while the ship sails to the next dock.
  • The distances for the recommended cycling tours are approximate.
  • The travel program and itinerary are subject to possible changes for nautical, technical or meteorological reasons or due to other unforeseen events.

Important information about the Sail & Bike trip program: A Sail & Bike tour always involves a bit of adventure, as we unfortunately can't control the weather! Only the departure and arrival points are 100% fixed on this trip. The captain determines the best route each day and discusses the options with the guests. The crew strives to keep the program as planned as possible. However, departure and arrival times may change. Sometimes the order of the program also needs to be adjusted. You may end up spending more or less time on the water than originally planned.

Our recommendation: Let the elements guide you and, above all, don't forget to enjoy your holiday! It will certainly be an exciting, varied, and active week filled with nature and culture. Weather permitting, we will sail the entire route. If you wish, you can then assist the crew with sailing and steering the vessel. Sailing experience is not required, as long as you listen carefully to the crew's instructions.
