Travel in a relaxed manner to Oranienburg on the outskirts of the capital Berlin. Welcome to the Ruppiner Land, which already inspired Theodor Fontane. Was it because of the enchanting Oranienburg Palace, which has towered over the city since 1651 and today, as the oldest baroque palace complex in all of Brandenburg, invites visitors to visit? At the vast forests, rustic canals and deep blue lakes, which convey a unique flair right next to the city? Or the lively capital of Berlin, which is only a short S-Bahn ride away? It doesn't matter whether you want culture, nature, trendy life or relaxation during your afternoon exploration - you are guaranteed to find the perfect place to start your cycling holiday in Copenhagen.

Overnight place: Oranienburg

Highlight of the day: Sachsenhausen Memorial and Museum

During the Second World War, more than 200.000 people lost their lives in the immediate vicinity of flowering meadows, which these days frame well-kept single-family homes. In 1936, the Sachsenhausen concentration camp was set up in the small town near Oranienburg. Today there is a memorial here, which shows exhibitions on the life of those who were once imprisoned and on the history of the concentration camp in some of the original camp buildings and building remains.

Cycle more today and experience more tomorrow or make today a real day of discovery - you are free to decide! The start is the same: just a few meters behind your hotel you will see the first signpost for the Berlin-Copenhagen cycle path. Cycle along the sometimes densely grown Oder-Havel Canal, which offers an enchanting backdrop for your cycling adventure, especially at the exit from Oranienburg and on the following kilometers with its reed belt and whistling reed warblers.

The white towers of the Lehnitz lock, which was built around 100 years ago and is considered the busiest on the Oder-Havel waterway, soon come into view. You then cycle effortlessly through the flat landscape on very beautiful cycle paths - with an essential stop at the local history museum in Liebenwalde, which was once a city prison. Take a look into the old cells and learn interesting facts about shipping on the canals of the region.

Overnight place: Zehdenick/Fürstenberg/surroundings

Highlight of the day: Brickyard Park Mildenberg

A visit to the a few kilometers north of Zehdenick is worthwhile largest brick museum in Europe. The Ziegeleipark Mildenberg in the heart of a former clay engraving landscape was a production site for bricks until 1991, with which entire districts of Berlin were built, among other things. Today, the 40-acre monument is a significant one cultural and industrial site, with outdoor activities and exhibitions. Would you like to take a ride on a clay wagon train?

The Mecklenburg Lake District begins at the “Großer Stechlin”, which was immortalized in literature by Fontane. The deep and at the same time clear bathing lake is only a few minutes by bike from the attractive town of Fürstenberg/Havel, which is the only water town in Germany and impresses with a neo-Byzantine-style town church that appears yellow. Fontane's little paradise shows you what you can look forward to on your journey to Neustrelitz from now on: many small lakes with secluded shores and small bathing areas that offer cyclists perfect opportunities to rest.

Don't linger too long in the lake idylls. In the afternoon, the former residential city of Neustrelitz awaits you, which is also embedded in a beautiful water landscape and, with its castle park, star-shaped market square and historic city complex, allows great insights into the history of the Grand Duchy of Strelitz.

Overnight place: Neustrelitz/surroundings

Castle of Wesenberg

Around 15 kilometers before the finish of today's stage, you should take a side jump to the Wesenberg Castle. The mediaeval tower hill castle, which was built in the 13th century, now houses a local history room with a fishing museum that is well worth seeing. From the so-called Fangelturm you can see the slightly hilly lake landscape - and perhaps the further course of the Berlin-Copenhagen cycle path?

A lot of forest and many lakes offer the best conditions for impressive nature experiences in the heart of the Mecklenburg Lake District. Experience Europe's largest contiguous lake area and one of the last true natural paradises in Germany. Here you can not only see magnificent eagles and majestic cranes, but also discover lots of rare plant species along the way. Speaking of eagles: a few kilometers behind the headwaters of the Havel you will pass the national park information center in Federow. Chain your bike up briefly and from here take a walk to an observation point for a view of an osprey nest.

Other experiences that lure on the third cycling stage are a visit to the glass factory in Dalmsdorf, a bat exhibition in the National Park Information Center in Kratzeburg and an evening stroll along the lake promenade and the port of Waren/Müritz.

Overnight place: Waren (Müritz)

Highlight of the day: Heinrich Schliemann Museum in Ankershagen

From Mecklenburg to Troy: Under the motto "Discover Schliemann's World", the Heinrich Schliemann Museum takes you through the life and research work of the famous archaeologist of the same name. Even from afar you will notice the birthplace of the excavation expert: Just keep your eyes open for the wooden Trojan horse that welcomes cyclists to the jewel in Ankershagen.

They leave the lovely little town Waren/Müritz heading north and getting closer and closer to their intermediate destination, the Baltic Sea coast. The rest of the cycle tour leads through the last foothills of the Mecklenburg Lake District and through wooded nature parks such as the Nossentiner Heide. You will soon reach the picturesque town of Krakow am See, which will inspire you with a pretty shoreline including small bathing bays and a small but fine old town. To get to the center, simply follow the spire of the brick town church. The town's book printing museum, which is well worth seeing, can also be reached quickly around here.

In the afternoon you cycle leisurely into the Barlach town of Güstrow - a typical small town in Mecklenburg. In any case, you should discover the legacy of its namesake and go in search of the world-famous sculpture "The Floating One". A tip for the evening: An enjoyable visit to the Barlach-Stuben, which awaits you right next to the artist's former home.

Overnight place: Güstrow/surroundings

Day highlight: Lake Krakow

You should devote an extra rest to one of the most beautiful lakes in the state of Mecklenburg-West Pomerania. Experience maritime flair on the dreamy lake shore, which is lined with small cafés, thatched boathouses and the historic fishing yard with fishermen's huts. If the weather is nice, you can also take a trip with the electric solar boat “Lena Manuela” from here.

You cycle along the river "Nebel" and the subsequent Bützow-Güstrow Canal through the Warnow valley towards the Baltic Sea. It remains hilly at first as you steer your bike through an open and wide landscape. You should plan a short stop at the so-called Gänsebrunnen in the town of Bützow and think about it over a coffee in the Marktplatz café: Güstrow or Bützow? Which of the two lovely sister cities enchanted you more?

Passing the old water mill in the town of Schwaan, in which today an art museum shows the traces of the former artists' colony, you continue on largely paved paths to the Hanseatic city of Rostock. In the Baltic Sea metropolis you can swap the rich natural landscape for an equally rich cultural landscape for a moment. Historical cultural monuments such as the colossal Marienkirche or old merchants' houses in the northern old town bear witness to a magnificent past. A stroll along the busy city harbor on the banks of the Warnow marks the end of your city tour.

Overnight place: Rostock

Highlight of the day: Former artist colony Schwaan

At the end of the 19th century, an artists' colony developed in Schwaan. Here the artistic work was not only determined by foreign brush virtuosos, but above all local artists shaped the level of painting. A visit to the Schwaan Art Museum is worthwhile - not least because you have experienced some scenic inspiration and motifs of the former artists up close on the previous kilometers of your bike tour.

The Rostock ferry port is a short hop on the east bank of the Warnow. After twelve kilometers on the saddle and two hours on the ferry, you will reach the dreamy Danish town of Gedser on the southern tip of the island of Falster. Instead of gentle hills, as on the previous days, an exclusively flat cycle path profile awaits you from now on. We keep our fingers crossed that the wind blows from the south on the day of your stage and that you reach the small town of Nykøbing comfortably and relaxed on dead-straight paths.

Falster's water-encircled island capital awaits you - and with lots of charm. Cycle past old half-timbered houses, marvel at the 43 meter high water tower or relax with a movie night in the large "Scala Bio", a relatively new cinema on the city's beach boulevard.

Overnight place: Nykøbing

Highlight of the day: Ferry ride Rostock – Gedser

Fancy a little change? For your ferry trip from Rostock to Gedser, you board one of the modern hybrid ferries operated by the shipping company Scandlines, which cross the Kadetrinne every two hours - one of the busiest waterways in the Baltic Sea. From the top deck of the ship you have a magnificent view of the hustle and bustle in the popular Baltic Sea resort of Warnemünde, its wide sandy beach and the Warnemünde lighthouse.

Off to the island of Møn! On leaving Nykøbing, you first pass the zoo and the city's botanical gardens, which are well worth seeing, before heading straight to the coast. With a constant view of the sea, you cycle on the Berlin-Copenhagen long-distance cycle path past picturesque sand and pebble beaches and through easy terrain to the old merchant town of Stubbekøbing. Here it is worth visiting Denmark's largest motorcycle museum, which has Northern Europe's largest collection of vintage motorcycles. Now you have a choice: either take the bicycle ferry to Bogø or cycle overland to Kalvehave on the island of Møn. The small town of Stege is your destination for today. Unless you take a little trip to the island's white chalk cliffs (Møns Klint). The impressive rock formation at the edge of the sea is up to 128 meters high - making it the highest cliff in Denmark.

Overnight place: Roast

Day highlight: Corselitze estate and rose garden

The picturesque garden of the Corselitze estate, which you can reach via a short detour of four kilometers, will remind you of an English landscape garden. However, to one of the superlatives. Enjoy the floral splendor and beautiful monuments created by the sculptor Luigi Grossi. By the way: Just a short walk away you can admire the fascinating "Valdemarsegen" (Waldemar oak), Denmark's largest tree.

Over the bridge from Møn to Zealand. Country houses and manor houses surrounded by farmland characterize the landscape. It is approx. 55 km to Fakse Ladeplads and Rødvig with its fascinating cliffs
approx. 75 km. With an overnight stay in Rødvig you have reached your destination. If you stay overnight in Køge, you can take a shortcut from both places by train (on your own). Sporty cyclists can continue cycling and cover the entire route of approx. 107 km to Køge.

Overnight place: Rødvig/Køge

Daytime highlight: Queen Alexandrine Bridge

A few kilometers after the start of the stage you will reach the Queen Alexandrine Bridge, on which you will walk around 750 meters until you reach the opposite bank. The 26 meter high bridge is considered one of the most beautiful in Denmark and even made it as the main motif on the Danish 500-kroner note. You should stop and pause briefly on the bridge - in view of the unique view over the Steger Bay.

It's getting more urban. Larger and larger cities are lined up on the Køger Bay and prepare anticipation for the Danish capital Copenhagen. But don't worry: You don't have to do without vast fields and miles of beaches. They are the connecting element on this stage.

You will also see the clinking masts of small and large sailboats more frequently. Pretty marinas like that of "Hundige Havn" exude a real Danish feeling and are the harbingers of equally beautiful bathing bays where Danish day-trippers cavort in summer. Anyone who prefers a cultural experience to pure relaxation should put the Arken Museum of Modern Art on their agenda. Located in Ishøj, it presents world-class art and architecture.

With a view of the so-called "Amager Fælled", a pasture and nature reserve that was used as an execution site until 1845, you cycle across the city limits to Copenhagen. Welcome!

Explore the city center on a long walk, where lively Nyhavn, the historic amusement park Tivoli, the magnificent Rosenborg Castle and Strøget, Copenhagen's bustling pedestrian street, are all worth a visit.

Overnight place: Copenhagen

Highlight of the day: The Little Mermaid

The Little Mermaid (originally "Den Lille Havfrue") awaits you at Copenhagen Harbour. The bronze statue, just over a meter tall, is one of the most photographed sights in Denmark. It goes back to the fairytale character of the same name by the well-known Danish poet Hans Christian Andersen.

After a hearty breakfast, your cycle tour on the Berlin-Copenhagen long-distance cycle path ends. Departure on your own. We are happy to book additional nights on request.

Berlin-Copenhagen, challenging

Everything went well on this trip at the end of August. The weather was difficult - unfortunately - the rental bikes were really good (and great, thank you!, that we were able to use them two days earlier). We didn't always find the route and the length of the day trips ideal. Above all, we are still disappointed that we weren't able to explore the "white cliffs of the island of Møn" (as you described it). That doesn't seem to have been planned; and the idea of hurrying up the route (75 km) to arrive at the hotel in the early afternoon and taking the bus (...) to the cliffs was unfortunately not feasible either. Very disappointing! The route/location of the hotels or the number of days of travel should be reconsidered. The luggage transfer worked well - on one occasion the luggage didn't arrive at the hotel until 17.30 p.m., which we think is too late. With the documents, it would be important that the route is marked on the map as it is described in the ring binder. The accommodations were "mixedly convincing" - from very nice and comfortable to rather unsatisfactory. Especially if the hotel is very "out of town", it would be important to have a good restaurant so that you can eat well and healthily after a long bike tour. (We would like to rate the hotels individually, but that doesn't seem to be possible here, online?) The bike tour is a great way to get to the really special city of Copenhagen!

Tour feedback

We thoroughly enjoyed the tour from Berlin to Copenhagen 05.6.2023/15.06.2023/ to //. The weather was very kind to us, not a single drop of rain accompanied us, only blue skies and sunshine.
