The Rhine Route - a more than 1.200 km long route through several countries, which is described in four different parts in the Bikeline cycle tour books. In our new Rhine cycle path 4 we follow this bike line from Arnhem to Rotterdam. A varied route along historical places, beautiful fortified towns and a typical Dutch river landscape. The route is fully marked and largely runs along cycle paths. The route leads from Arnhem through historic places such as Oosterbeek, Wijk bij Duustede, Buren, Gorinchem and Dordrecht, along the typical Dutch river landscape and runs largely along cycle paths to Rotterdam. Optionally, customers can even cycle to Hoek van Holland, where the Rhine flows into the North Sea. Some highlights of this route include the Airborne Museum Hartenstein, Doorwerth Castle, Slot Loevestijn, Biesbosch National Park, the windmills of Kinderdijk and the end point Rotterdam, number 5 in the top 10 "world top cities" Lonely Planet Best in Travel 2016.

Die Rheinschleife bei Boppard am Rhein

The start of this route is in Arnhem, known from the Battle of Arnhem during the Second World War. But also a city with a great zoo, the beautiful Sonsbeek city park, the open-air museum and is located at the foot of the Hoge Veluwe and Southeast Veluwezoom national parks. The choice is yours: Do you want to stay overnight in the center or would you rather start the route just outside the city (free parking) at the foot of the Southeast Veluwezoom National Park?

A varied tour through the wooded area of Veluwezoom, along the 52 m high Grebbeberg, the southeastern tip of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. Military cemeteries are silent witnesses to the fierce fighting in the Second World War. Follow the Lower Rhine to Amerongen Castle, with its beautiful garden. The end point is the monumental Wijk bij Duurstede. Dorestad was located here at the time, which was the most important northern European trading city in the year 800. Enjoy the beautiful city center and if the weather is nice you can spend time in a street cafe on the market.

At Wijk bij Duurstede, located at a junction of the waterways, with the arched bridge harbor 'Wijkse Veer', cross the Lower Rhine and head towards the famous Dutch fruit region of the Betuwe. Along the historic town of Buren you reach the River Linge. Linge means "long", but a short, nice cycle path takes you quickly to the "glass city" Leerdam. After that you have the choice; either follow the Linge to the fortress town of Gorinchem or an extra loop that takes you via Vuren and a few ferries to Slot Loeverstein and Woudrichem before taking the last ferry to Gorinchem.

A walk through the old fortress town of Gorinchem is definitely worth it. Take the ferry that takes you to Werkendam. Through 'Knotenpunte' you cross the beautiful Biesbosch National Park, where the Waal and the Maas meet, on 1 or 2 boat tours (depending on the season). The motor ferry "De Biesbosch" runs all year round and crosses the Nieuwe Merwege to Kop van 't Land Land, and from there you reach Dordrecht. A "water bus" takes you across the Beneden Merwede to Papendrecht

Cycling through the Alblasserwaard you reach the Kinderdijk, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The nineteen polder mills are an international attraction and can be visited by bike. Then take the triangular ferry through Slikkerveer towards Rotterdam.
