Day 1: Arrival in Mainz
Arrive on your own. Not only the Roman-Germanic Central Museum, the Gutenberg Museum, the Imperial Cathedral and the Electoral Palace are worth a long visit.
Overnight stay in Mainz
Day 2: Mainz - Oberwesel, about 51 km
The beautiful first cycle route takes you through the gentle vineyards and well-known wine-growing towns of the Rheingau. Here the Rhine still flows gently, forming small romantic islands and expanding its bed to a width of up to 800 m! You can plan worthwhile detours (+ 14 km) to the half-timbered town of Eltville and to Eberbach Abbey. In Rüdesheim you should take the opportunity to stroll through the world-famous Drosselgasse or to take a relaxing ride on the cable car up to the Niederwald monument. From Rüdesheim to Bingen, use the Rhine ferry and then continue on the well-developed cycle path to Bacharach. In these 16 km alone you will pass the Mouse Tower, the castles of Rheinstein and Reichenstein, as well as Castle Sooneck and Hohneck and the ruins of Fürstenberg. Everywhere is worth a stop and in Bacharach you should climb the city wall before you finally roll into Oberwesel.
Overnight stay in Oberwesel
Day 3: Oberwesel - Koblenz, about 45 km
You will reach St. Goar in the morning and can climb the Loreley there. A hiking trail leads up and gives you a beautiful view of the narrowest point in the romantic Rhine Valley. This is the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley and the worthwhile visitor center on the Loreley offers interesting insights into the history, nature and culture of the region as well as the myth of the Loreley. Back on the shore, the cycle path then continues to Boppard. It's turbulent here, but you can also take the chairlift to the Vierseenblick to escape to the wooded, quiet heights and enjoy the view of the Rhine Valley again. Or visit the well-preserved Marksburg Castle and Stolzenfels Castle on the way to the Deutsches Eck in Koblenz, where you can end the day.
Overnight stay in Koblenz
Day 4: Koblenz - Bad Honnef, about 55 km
Cozy health resorts and inviting wine villages are vying for your visit today. Thermal baths and beer gardens also want to spoil the cyclists. Or give your bike a break and enjoy a piece on the Rhine boat from the water. Everything is possible for you between Koblenz and Bad Honnef! History buffs should pay a visit to the "Bridge of Remagen" museum shortly before the stage destination, before taking a leisurely stroll through Bad Honnef's pedestrian zone. Enjoy nice cafes and pretty half-timbered houses here.
Overnight stay in Bad Honnef
Day 5: Bad Honnef - Cologne, about 42 km
Today you roll past Bad Godesberg at the foot of the Siebengebirge. Marvel at the Drachenfelsen, which towers 250 m above the Rhine and take an exciting trip to the summit with the Drachenfelsbahn, the oldest cog railway in Germany. The old federal capital Bonn is also on your way and invites you to extensive sightseeing before the Cologne Cathedral comes into view.
