Altstadt Foto von Mainz am Rhein

Tourenkarte RheinradwegArrive early and look forward to the beautiful MainZer old town with its half-timbered houses and medieval market square. As you stroll, marvel at the Renaissance-style market fountain with its red pillars and Romanesque ones MainZer Cathedral with its deep red sandstone and striking octagonal tower. If you have a lot of time, you can visit the Gutenberg Museum, which is dedicated to the inventor of the printing press. If you have booked bikes, they will already be ready at the hotel and waiting for your first short tour.

Overnight place: Mainz

Welcome to the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley! The beautiful first cycle route takes you through gentle vineyard slopes and well-known wine-growing towns. Here the Rhine still flows leisurely, forming small romantic islands and expanding its bed to a width of up to 800 m! Visit the half-timbered town of Eltville, which is worth seeing, and plan a detour (+ 14 km) to Eberbach Monastery. In Rüdesheim you should take advantage of the opportunity to taste wine, stroll through the world-famous Drosselgasse or take a relaxing ride on the cable car to the Niederwald Monument.

Overnight place: Rudesheim

From Rüdesheim to Bingen you use the Rhine ferry and then continue on the well-developed cycle path to Bacharach. In these 16 km alone you pass the Mouse Tower, the Rheinstein and Reichenstein castles as well as Sooneck and Hohneck castles and also the Fürstenberg ruins. Everywhere is worth a stop and in Bacharach you should climb the city wall before finally rolling into St. Goar. Here you should then climb the Loreley. A hiking trail leads up and gives you a beautiful view of the narrowest place in the romantic Rhine Valley. This is the heart of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site and the worthwhile visitor center on the Loreley offers interesting insights into the history, nature and culture of the region as well as the myth of the Loreley.

Overnight place: St Goar

Further into the narrow Rhine Valley, the route initially leads to Boppard. It's turbulent here, but you can also take the chairlift to the Vierseenblick and escape to the quiet, wooded heights. Or visit the well-preserved Marksburg and Stolzenfels Castle on the way to the Deutsches Eck in Koblenz.

Overnight place: Koblenz

Today your wonderful cycling holiday ends after breakfast in Koblenz at the hotel. DB departure possible. Who back to MainIf you want to, we recommend our practical return transfer service (Wednesdays and Saturdays, departure around 12.30 p.m., duration around 1,5 hours), which takes you directly from the hotel in Koblenz back to the starting hotel.

We love the trip

Overall we loved our trip thank you. Two main suggestions: the direction instructions in the booklet are sometimes very long and hard to follow - suggest numbering or bullet pointing the steps to avoid confusion. The app is good overall but the map can be clunky mainly when the track has detours that the map doesn't know about or when paths converge. Getting out of Mainz was confusing due to roadworks and closed track pieces and finding the car ferry in Rudescheim could be clearer (along the wharf past the railway crossing). But overall we had a great experience. Thanks again.
