From the source to the mouth, they stand in close succession on both sides of the Saale like hardly any other German river. Old Thuringian towns such as Saalfeld and Rudolstadt lie on its banks. Not only poets like Goethe raved about the old university town of Jena, which is picturesquely embedded in the Saale valley. The Saale-Unstrut wine-growing region around Naumburg is now very popular among connoisseurs.

The cycle path leads in Heinrich-Heine-Park past the Thuringian farmhouses, one of the oldest folklore open-air museums on German soil. The tour leads along the Saalebahn away from the streets. Shortly before arriving in Saalfeld, cross the Saale bridge.
In Saalfeld there is an opportunity to visit the fairy grotto. Return journey by train on your own.

The three Dornburg castles greet you from afar. The ascent to Dornburg to the castles offers a fantastic view. Where the Ilm flows into the Saale, the castles of Saaleck and Rudelsburg come into view. A historic town center awaits you in Naumburg.

This section leads through beautiful alluvial forests. The adornment of the town of Weißenfels is Neu-Augustusburg Castle. One of the highlights of Bad Dürrenberg is the graduation tower. The imposing Merseburg Castle (own management), which together with the cathedral as "Merseburg City Crown" is probably one of the most beautiful city views ever. Halle, the more than 1.000-year-old saline city, is home to Giebichenstein Castle and Moritzburg Castle. You should definitely visit the Halloren and Saline Museum (on your own).

You drive through the Brachwitz Alps, which are part of the "Unteres Saaletal" nature park. A foot and cycle path bridge leads over to the pretty village of Gröna. The destination is the former royal seat of Bernburg. The Renaissance castle welcomes you. The old town of Bernburg is also worth seeing.

Numerous cultural sites are along the way. Worth mentioning is the castle and monastery church of St. Marien and St. Cyprian in Nienburg. You drive past several Saale crossings with ferries, untouched nature and on quiet country lanes to Barby, where the Saale flows into the Elbe. Continue to Schoenebeck. Part of the route can be shortened by train on your own.
