Follow in the footsteps of poets and thinkers along the Saale and Unstrut. On your bike tour you will discover many castles and palaces, after all there is more than 800 years of history in the area. For wine lovers, the numerous local winegrowers, such as the Rotkummel winery or the Dornburger Schlossberg, offer the opportunity for a tasting. Erfurt lures with the cathedral and the Kramer Bridge to some romantic corners in the old town.
Take the train to Bad Berka (on your own). The spa town with its healing springs is closely linked to Goethe's work. You follow the Ilm Cycle path via Mellingen, where the idyllic Untermühle am Ilminvite you to rest. Further towards Weimar, the Belvedere Palace would be another highlight of your tour with a beautiful park and orangery. Again will be one Ilmwehr in Oberweimar before returning to Weimar.

Weimar alone offers so many possibilities, themes and history, the city and its heritage to learn about Goethe and Schiller as well as the Bauhaus or the Weimar Republic, one would certainly want to have a whole day to look around Weimar.

Take the train (on your own) to Erfurt. Cycle through the old town to the cathedral. Stroll through Erfurt's narrow streets to the fish market and the Merchants' Bridge, and discover other corners of the old town or the Eulenspiegel Monument. The cycle tour follows the Thuringian Towns Chain route back to Weimar.

Nestled amidst vineyards on a rocky plateau overlooking the Saale River, three castles occupy an impressive location (closed Wednesdays). More than 800 years of history are united here. The Old Castle contains remnants of a medieval fortress. The Rococo Castle is an elegant 18th-century pleasure palace with a porcelain collection. The Renaissance Castle is closely associated with Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who raved about the lovingly tended castle gardens – a true delight for strollers and rose enthusiasts. The wine from the Dornburg Castle vineyard is as popular today as it was then. Ilm Cycle path to Apolda and cross the country to the Saale valley via rooms to Dornburg. Return to Apolda approx. 13 km to the train station. Return to Weimar on your own.
