In Essen and the surrounding area, former railway lines lead through verdant landscapes, past impressive coal mines and disused industrial sites. The Ruhr River accompanies many of these routes – sometimes tranquil, sometimes lively – offering ever-changing vistas. Gray industrial areas have been transformed into green corridors for cyclists. Rediscover the Ruhr region on two wheels, exploring its blend of history and nature.

In Gelsenkirchen's Nordsternpark, many things are reminders of the former coal mine that once stood here. Numerous mine buildings have been integrated into the park (which hosted the Federal Garden Show in 1997). The park is dominated by the 18-meter-high "Hercules of Gelsenkirchen." The circular route also leads across two slag heaps, which are adorned with modern sculptures. From here, there is a beautiful view of the surrounding area.

The first stop is the Gasometer in Oberhausen, arguably one of the world's most extraordinary exhibition halls. The tour continues along the Rhine-Herne Canal to the Duisburg-Nord Landscape Park, which surrounds a disused steelworks site. See how nature is reclaiming the land.

The cycle highway leads to Mülheim. Cycling upstream along the Ruhr River, you'll pass through several charming little districts: Saarn (with its monastery and beautiful old town), Kettwig, and Werden (a former abbey). Villa Hügel (the former residence of the Krupp family) rises above Lake Baldeney. End your day of cycling in one of the many beer gardens along the Ruhr.
