Through the upper Altmühl valley you reach the picturesque town of Leutershausen. In Herrieden the medieval atmosphere is still palpable. You will find impressive monuments in the former royal seat of Ansbach.

The romantic Altmühlsee in Gunzenhausen invites you to take a break. Located in the Altmühltal Nature Park, you will find the historic Weißenburg and the spa town of Treuchtlingen.

Bizarre rock formations now line the further course of the river through a landscape of unique beauty. A baroque natural jewel is the episcopal city of Eichstätt. Chocolate and coffee lovers will find culinary delights in the Café Chocolatique.

The route takes you through the Gungolding juniper heath to Kipfenberg, where the Roman and Bavarian Museum is well worth seeing. The town of Beilngries is located in the middle of the Altmühltal Nature Park. The historic old town centre is surrounded by a well-preserved town wall.

After visiting the lock of the MainFrom the Danube Canal in Dietfurt, you will drive towards the three-castle town of Riedenburg, where you will find a magnificent collection of crystals and gemstones in the Crystal Museum. In Kelheim, you can visit the impressive Liberation Hall on the Michelsberg.

At Weltenburg you can experience the Danube Gorge by boat (not included in the travel price). Now it is not far to your destination Regensburg. The medieval cityscape with over 1.000 individual monuments in the UNESCO World Heritage city awaits your discovery.

Cycle tour Altmühltal via Bad Gögging

Dear Sir or Madam, yesterday we finished our bike tour from Rothenburg to Regensburg and would like to give you the following feedback. Our expectations were partially fulfilled, but we were somewhat disappointed in the following points: 1. Because we were directed from Riedenburg via a side route to Bad Gögging, we missed a very important and beautiful section of the Altmühl Valley. We think that's a real shame, especially since we had no influence on the course of the tour when booking. 2. The route from Riedenburg to Bad Gögging was on country roads and the hotel "The Monarch" did not fit the character of this romantic tour in our opinion. We felt out of place and uncomfortable in this hotel and the surrounding area. 3. The travel documents for this section of the route also contained insufficient information and details. Our suggestion for future route planning: leave out Bad Gögging and instead offer only the Altmühl Valley cycle path from Riedenburg to Kehlheim. Kind regards, Frank Dittrich-Bösche and Bärbel Bösche
