Thuringian Highlights: The Short One

The “Thuringian Cities Chain” long-distance cycle path connects four of the most beautiful Thuringian cities on this section. The route leads from the Wartburg town of Eisenach via the residential town of Gotha to the cathedral city of Erfurt. We continue to the classic city of Weimar, where you can follow in the footsteps of Schiller and Goethe. Culture is very important on this trip. The cycling stages of 25 to 41 km offer plenty of time for all the sights in the afternoon.

Look forward to the historic Wartburg town of Eisenach. Numerous famous personalities such as Johann Sebastian Bach, St. Elisabeth and Martin Luther worked here and museums are dedicated to their life's works.

Following the course of the Hörsel, you cycle mostly on small roads through the Thuringian Basin to Gotha. On the way, marvel at the well-preserved Art Nouveau complex of the Boxberg racecourse with its well-known tourist restaurant and look forward to Friedenstein Castle and Gotha's main market, which is well worth seeing.

In the morning you reach the beautiful town of Wechmar, which is known for its Bach ancestral home (museum). Soon you will see the striking trio of castles on the side of the path, the Wachsenburg, the Mühlburg and Gleichen Castle, called the Drei Gleichen. Not far from this castle ensemble, one of the oldest restaurants in Thuringia invites you to take a break before you follow the course of the Gera in the afternoon. The path leads through the most beautiful parks directly into the center of the old trading town of Erfurt. Discover the striking cathedral and the built-over Krämerbrücke in this city that is well worth seeing.

After a short day's journey, you roll into the classic city of Weimar and can, among other things, walk in the footsteps of Goethe and Schiller, visit the Residenzschloss and the Bauhaus Museum, visit the National Theater or even in the park at the Ilm relax. One thing is certain: you won't get bored.
