GUIDED E-BIKE TOUR: THE VENETO CYCLING TOUR from Bolzano to Venice

Tourenkarte ITA 01

Individual arrival in the bilingual city of Bozen, which rises along the river Eisack. It has always been a transshipment point between the Mediterranean and Central Europe and today an important economic and tourist center.

Overnight place: Bolzano

Today you cycle along the banks of the Adige, past the famous orchards and vineyards of the lowlands. Halfway between Bolzano and Trento you will find Salurn, the language border between the German-speaking and Italian-speaking areas of northern Italy. You can shorten the stage by taking the train in several stations.

Overnight place: Trent

The Adige River accompanies you all the way to Rovereto, the town with the renowned Museum of Contemporary Art. From there, you leave the valley and cycle up a short climb to the San Giovanni Pass, from where the breathtaking descent begins, offering spectacular views of Lake Garda and the town of Torbole. From Riva del Garda, you take a ferry south along the lake.

Overnight place: fishpond

After the gentle hills that surround Lake Garda, you will meet the river Etsch again and cycle with it to Verona, one of the most important cities in the Veneto. A visit to the Roman Arena, the Church of San Zeno and the House of Juliet are essential.

Overnight place: Verona

In the hinterland of Verona, you cycle along the foot of the Lessini Mountains, where you'll encounter the castle of Soave amidst the vineyards. The flat route takes you past the beautiful castles of Romeo and Juliet in Montecchio Maggiore, while the hilly section leads you through the Berici Hills. Vicenza, the little gem with the buildings of Andrea Paladio, one of the most famous architects of the 16th century, awaits you at the end of the day. The stage can be shortened thanks to the train station in San Bonifacio.

Overnight place: Vicenza

You leave Vicenza and cycle along the Bacchiglione River, where you can admire the magnificent Villa Rotonda, Palladio's masterpiece. After the village of Montegalda, the route continues towards the Euganean Hills, where a relaxing evening awaits you in Europe's largest thermal spa area.

Overnight place: Padua

Along the bike path that flanks the Battaglia canal, you will cross the university city of Padua, rich in art and history. Along the Piovego Canal you will then reach Stra and further along the Brenta River you will pass some of the most famous villas of the Venetian nobility (Villa Pisani, Villa Malcontenta, Villa Widmann) before reaching Mestre, the mainland of Venice.

From Bolzano to Venice

The hotels were supposed to be within walking distance of the city centres. This was only partially the case. With the exception of one (Puccini on Lake Garda), the hotels were good to very good.

hot, hotter, bike tour Bolzano-Venice

We are back from a strenuous, hot but largely wonderful tour. During the introduction in Bolzano, details of the tour were pointed out. The entire route is signposted with countless small black stickers with green arrows, which you then had to look for and pay attention to. Sometimes the route was a bit unusual, e.g. cycle paths on the left side of the road against the direction of travel, routes over large, confusing intersections but mostly off the roads and, in the first part of the tour, mostly along the Etsch. The crossing over Lake Garda turned out to be a bit long at 5 hours. The hotels were great, three even had a pool. We recommend an extra night in Verona. We used it for a long stroll around the city and an evening visit to the opera. We also recommend extra nights in Mestre. From here you can easily travel to Venice by bus. The day or multi-day ticket is also a ticket for the vaporetto. We managed very well with the maps. The tour book with the very detailed directions can be used to read up on things in more detail if you have any problems. However, we noticed that there are slight differences between the English and German versions. For example, you are asked to ride to the right of the river or to the left of the river. We rode with our own bikes, but fellow travelers were very happy with the rental bikes. However, we would have liked to have received the travel documents (tour book and directions) before departure and not in Bolzano. Our conclusion: Recommended but exhausting with constant 38-39°C

Cycling in the mountains is particularly appealing

Instead of 280 km, it was 345 km - that was a shock and I wouldn't have done the tour with children, but maybe with teenagers. So it was a sporty tour and therefore a little too little time in the individual cities. We will go there again - at least to Padua. You should remove the restaurant recommendation in Trento "La Cantinota". We met everyone who followed your recommendation again in the restaurant opposite, which was extremely nice and tasty. The organization, the luggage transport, the maps (excellent), the return transport were very good. The hotels were very different, although we didn't like the "Venezia" in Trento in terms of the facilities (door doesn't close) and the breakfast. We particularly liked the Albergo San Raffaele in Vincenza. Great location, very friendly, friendly staff and a really quiet location with a great view of the city - a particularly experience in the evening. Overall, the route was very well signposted and the detailed map was superfluous. We liked to buy cakes, bread and drinks from the bakers along the route. Delicious and inexpensive. In Mestre we recommend the "Officina des gusto" at the back of the Hotel Venizia. Very good food. Cycling is just lovely - even if we couldn't get shelter in the rain because there are no bus shelters and the properties are fenced in. Venice in constant rain was also something - not everyone experiences that! But that's how it is. Overall it was a very nice trip with just one flat tire.

Wonderful bike ride!

Four of us did the Bolzano - Venice bike tour in August 2014 with our own bikes and we were absolutely thrilled. The route is easy to find using the map provided and the arrows along the way (only a few were missing). The hotels in the cheaper category were all good, as was the breakfast. The luggage transport worked well. Only the "introductory event" in Bolzano was a bit uncoordinated. Here, a supervisor informed the participants of various tours together - unfortunately a bit brief and uncoordinated. We would still recommend this tour and would certainly like to do another one ourselves.

It couldn't be better

Dear Mecklenburgers, we have had a really wonderful week of cycling, we are very satisfied. You could do the entire tour following the signs, so you hardly had to consult the very good documentation. The length of the stages and the accommodations were very well coordinated. Small points of criticism: The departure time of the ship from Lake Garda was incorrect (15:35 p.m. instead of 15:00 p.m.). The half hour later meant that there was little time for small purchases after arriving in Decenziano. A note about the very poor catering on board the ferry with a four-hour journey would have been very helpful. Especially since there was enough time in Riva to prepare. The breakfast at the Hotel Albermonaco in Trento was unfortunately the worst of the tour, the coffee machine alone was an imposition. But these were the negative aspects. Overall we felt very comfortable, a particular highlight was the Hotel Elite in Mestre, an ideal starting point for Venice, great public transport connections. We would be happy to book another tour.
