Arrive on your own during the day.
Scotland's oldest long-distance hiking trail takes you into the rugged world of the Highlands. This used to be barren land inhabited only by a few traders and shepherds. Battles were fought here and robbers and gangs of thieves used the solitude as a retreat. Today this region is still largely untouched and is extremely diverse. The paths meander along the banks of Loch Lomond, lonely and deserted, only to offer views of the surrounding peaks again a few kilometers further on. The West Highland Way is now one of the most popular hiking routes in Europe and attracts travelers from all over the world.
The tour takes you out of the city through quiet forests and slowly takes you to the Highlands. On the way to Drymen you pass the Glengoyne Distillery. Stop here to taste a glass of whiskey and learn more about how this Scottish specialty is produced. Drymen is the last major stopover for a longer period of time.
First you climb “Conic Hill” and enjoy the views of Loch Lomond – the largest lake in Scotland. The descent takes you to Balmaha and after that civilization ends for a few kilometers. There are only narrow footpaths on the east bank of Loch Lomond. The hike is a poem.
One of the most beautiful stages on the West Highland Way. You hike on forest roads to the waterfall in Inversnaid. The path then curls idyllically along the bank. Uphill, downhill, left, right... the path is idyllic and varied, offers views of small islands and leads past the hiding place of the bandit Rob Roy.
After the many ascents and descents of the last few days, things continue more comfortably today. The West Highland Way climbs slowly from Inverarnan until you pass the small village of Crianlarich. From here you can see the peaks of Ben More and Stob Binnean, while you can enjoy the views of Loch Lomond.
We continue through lonely forests to Tyndrum, your destination for today.
Wonderful views await you today too. A slightly longer climb awaits you just after the small village of Bridge of Orchy. Afterwards you hike on old military roads where you make quick progress. The roads take you past small forests to the Inveroran hotel. This is extremely secluded in the middle of the Scottish Highlands.
An old military road takes you past countless, deep black lakes. Today's destination is Kingshouse - a former trading post in the middle of the Scottish Highlands. You even pass a small ski resort on the way.
Passing what is probably the most spectacular peak in Scotland, the Buachaille Etive Mòr, you reach the “Devils Staircase”. Soldiers who had to cross the numerous serpentines gave this pass its name. The tour takes you down into a small valley and offers wonderful views of the surrounding peaks. The small town of Kinlochleven offers some civilization again after a few days in the untouched Highlands.
A long stage concludes the tour on the West Highland Way. You again follow an old military road that takes you to a plateau. From here through quiet forests and past the ruins of a small fort until Ben Nevis comes into view. The walk into the town of For William concludes the walk on the West Highland Way.
