Cycling from Münsterland to the North Sea, what a wonderful cycling experience. On the way to the Emsland to the North Sea, the Ems slowly increases in thickness so that it finally gives way to the first route of the huge cruise ships built in Papenburg on its waves. Emsauen, moor marsh and heathland accompany you along the way. And when the tide pushes into the country, the tide sometimes flows backwards. Come with us on this contemplative cycle tour from Münster to Emden on the North Sea.
Our cycle tour along the Ems cycle path from Münster to the mouth of the North Sea near Emden takes you very relaxed and right through the flat country. Stress doesn't stand a chance on this holiday! The Ems Cycle Path takes you, mostly along the river, through a charming natural environment characterized by forests, moors and river meadows. You start in lively Münster and your route takes you to towns such as Meppen and Lingen with plenty of historic buildings. At 371 km, the Ems is not the longest river in Germany. But the Ems is Germany's longest river, rising in Germany and flowing into the sea while retaining its name from source to mouth. Ships can be found from Ems 44,8 km south of Rheine up to the North Sea. From Papenburg, the Ems serves as a transport route for large and cruise ships from Meyer Werft. In order for these ships to be able to pass the Ems, the river is dammed by means of the Ems barrage near Gandersum in order to get the necessary fairway.
