The Old Salt Road was one of the most important trade routes in Northern Europe during the Middle Ages. It connected the wealthy salt town of Lüneburg with the powerful Hanseatic city of Lübeck and was the lifeblood of so-called "white gold." For centuries, Lüneburg salt was a highly sought-after commodity, essential for preserving fish and meat , and formed the basis for the flourishing Hanseatic League trade throughout the Baltic region, particularly with the important herring market in Scania (southern Sweden) . Salt – either loose or packed in barrels – was transported along this route by horse-drawn cart. Discover the picturesque landscapes by following in the footsteps of the old salt carriers!

The best time to experience the Lüneburg Heath in full bloom is generally from the beginning of August to mid-September . A guideline states that the main flowering period for the most widespread heather species, common heather (Calluna vulgaris) , is from August 08.08th to September 09.09th. However, it should be noted that the exact timing of the flowering depends on the specific weather conditions and can vary from year to year.
Getting to the Lüneburg Heath:
Car : Ideal for individual exploration and more remote locations. Use the A7 motorway – but note that central areas like Wilsede are car-free – in that case, park on the outskirts (e.g., Undeloh, Niederhaverbeck).
Rail : Good ICE connections to larger cities (Hamburg, Hanover, Lüneburg), from there regional trains (Metronom, Heidebahn) directly to many heathland towns.
Heide-Shuttle : The best option on site is from July to October! This free circular bus (often with a bicycle trailer!) connects the main attractions and train stations of the heath and makes exploring without your own car very easy.
It's difficult to name the "most beautiful place " in the Lüneburg Heath, as this depends very much on personal preference . However, the Lüneburg Heath offers a multitude of beautiful landscapes and places.
We think the following place is the most beautiful:
The Wilseder Berg : It is considered the heart of the Lüneburg Heath and, at 169 meters, is the highest elevation in the Northwest German Plain. From here, one has a breathtaking panoramic view across the vast heathlands, and in good weather, the view even extends as far as Hamburg.
