North Sea Coast Cycle Route

The landscape along the North Sea Coast Cycle Route is characterized by the unique climate of the North Sea: vast landscapes, miles of dykes, the Wadden Sea, sandy beaches and many small islands near the coast. All of this will accompany you on a bike tour along the North Sea.

In Lower Saxony, the North Sea Coast Cycle Route runs through East Friesland. Here the Wadden Sea is your constant companion. The natural landscape of the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park is ideal for cycling. The small East Frisian Islands are suitable for day trips and are particularly relaxing because no cars are allowed to drive here. Stroll along the sandy beaches and breathe in the fresh North Sea air. Wilhelmshaven is the first major city on the North Sea Coast Cycle Route. Even today, the city is Germany's largest naval base and a popular destination for numerous sights. Wilhelmshaven is located directly on the Jade Bay, which you can either cycle around or take the shortcut with the ferry. At low tide, a mudflat hike in the Jade Bay is a great change from cycling. However, this should only be undertaken with an experienced mudflat guide. You can cycle past Bremerhaven and Cuxhaven on the border between Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein to the city of Hamburg. Experience the maritime metropolis on the North Sea and be surprised by the charm of the Hanseatic city. On the way to Hamburg, the North Sea Coast Cycle Route leads through the Alte Land, a huge fruit-growing area that becomes a gourmet mile at harvest time. Fresh fruit, liqueurs, cakes and much more is offered here by the fruit growers.

If the hustle and bustle in and around Hamburg is too much for you, you can circumnavigate Hamburg by ferry from Cuxhaven to Brunsbüttel and save a few kilometers. The Kiel Canal flows directly into the North Sea in Brunsbüttel and the huge lock systems are not only interesting for technology fans. From here, the North Sea Coast Cycle Route leads inland and meets the coast again in Büsum. The North Sea coast of Schleswig-Holstein is also characterized by the Wadden Sea, miles of dykes, sheep and many small islands. The North Frisian Islands lie off the coast, with seals lying in the sun on their sandy beaches. The forces of nature determine the landscape here and the fresh iodine-rich air is very popular with many holidaymakers and spa guests because of its healing effects.

Varied areas and a great climate on the North Sea Coast Cycle Path

The North Sea Coast Cycle Route takes you along the western side of Schleswig-Holstein in the inner-German area. In this stage of the North Sea Coast Cycle Tour, you can enjoy the view of the North Frisian Islands, which include the islands of Föhr, Amrum and Pellworm in addition to the island of Sylt. Via the so-called German Bight, the North Sea Coast Cycle Path continues along the Elbe to Hamburg, where the Elbe crossing and the diverse cityscape are another highlight.

In the further course of the tour on the North Sea Coast Cycle Path you will pass Cuxhaven, the Weser near Bremerhaven, the Jade Bay and Wilhelmshaven and get exciting impressions of the diverse maritime region in Germany. The North Sea Coast Cycle Path continues through East Friesland with a unique view of the East Frisian Islands, until the cycle route at the Leybucht slowly but surely winds towards the Netherlands, where more adventures await motivated two-wheeler tourists. Bike tours on the North Sea Coast Cycle Path

Due to its direct proximity to the coast, the North Sea Coast Cycle Path has a very flat elevation profile and the routes can be mastered without any significant inclines. This is why the cycle path is particularly popular with recreational cyclists and families with children. If you cycle the bike path from west to east, there is a relatively good chance that the wind will push you ahead. However, since headwinds can always slow you down, you should not choose the daily stages too long, especially if you are traveling with children. Wind and waterproof clothing is recommended both in summer and in winter on the North Sea coast.

In summer you can always have your bathing suit with you, so you can take a break on one of the numerous beaches and jump into the cool water. The most popular is probably the 12 km long and 2 km wide sandy beach in St. Peter-Ording. The best way to explore the North Sea coast of Schleswig-Holstein by bike is on a cycle tour from Hamburg to Sylt. The best way to explore the island world of East Friesland is with a round trip through East Friesland with crossings to the islands of Borkum, Norderney and Langenoog.
