The Usedom cycle path ☀️

The Usedom cycle path

Usedom is considered a paradise for nature lovers, hikers and cyclists. The network of paths on Germany's second largest island is well developed. The most popular and largely flat is the approximately 40 km long one Baltic Coast Cycle Route also known as the Usedom cycle path. It leads from the northern tip of Usedom via Karlshagen along the Three Emperors' Baths to the Polish border. There are attractions for the whole family along the route. In the seaside resort of Trassenheide you can visit a butterfly farm. The Usedom Park in Wiesenweg is also great fun for young and old. Right next door, the "upside down house" gives visitors an unusual perspective.

The four amber baths

If you want to explore the seabed without getting your feet wet, we recommend continuing to Zinnowitz. The underwater world of the Baltic Sea can be admired through the panorama window of the diving gondola on the pier. In the four amber baths of Zempin, Koserow, Loddin and Ueckerritz, everything revolves around the "Gold of the Baltic Sea". If you like, you can hike in the footsteps of the legendary amber witch to the Streckelsberg. The famous imperial spas of Bansin, Heringsdorf and Ahlbeck line up like pearls on a string. The Usedomradweg runs right next to the beach promenade. That means getting off and pushing. You can admire the lovingly restored villas in the style of resort architecture or enjoy the magnificent view of the Baltic Sea.

Experience the bathing railway

Away from the Usedom cycle path, the landscape becomes quite hilly. The wind also makes cycling on Usedom a bit strenuous at times. If you are too tired to return after the tour, you will find a number of stops for the Usedomer Bäder-Bahn along the coast. Bicycles are allowed on all UBB lines. Whether by bike or by train - since the border was opened, a spontaneous visit to the former Świnoujście has been possible without any problems. The detour to the Polish part of Usedom is particularly worthwhile for families with children. You eat well and cheaply here, but you can pay with euros. The Poles are very child-friendly, and the shallow water on the sandy beach of Swinoujscie invites you to splash around. The Świnoujście lighthouse is the highest on the Baltic Sea. Visitors with a head for heights are rewarded with a fantastic view.

Approach Usedom directly

If you want to approach your holiday in a really sporty way, you can also cycle directly to Usedom. The well-developed Berlin-Usedom long-distance cycle path is part of the Europe-wide cycle path network. The Usedom cycle path leads through charming landscapes such as the Ueckermünder Heide across the island of Usedom and ends after 337 kilometers in Peenemünde. If you turn off beforehand, you can cycle in the footsteps of Lyonel Feininger. Many of the famous painter's pictures were taken on Usedom. The Feininger route runs via Nepperminn, Benz, Korswandt and Zirchow to Swinoujscie.

The Lakes Cycle Path from Lüneburg to Wolgast is 640 kilometers long. The section through Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is one of the most beautiful sections. From Anklam you cycle over the old bascule bridge to Zecherin on Usedom. If you want to relax away from the seaside resorts, we recommend a bike tour through the Usedom Winkel to the Mellenthin Heath. A visit to the bison reserve near Dargen is a very special attraction.

Cycling on Usedom

Usedom - the sunny Baltic Sea island with variety

The island of Usedom is a great experience for every bike tour fan. Especially for families with younger children and cyclists who like to take it easy or want to forgo extreme sporting challenges, the largely flat landscape of Usedom is a real gift. The maximum gradient that you can encounter here is 60 meters in altitude. A fresh breeze often accompanies you when cycling on the island, occasionally a slightly stronger wind. Often advertised as a sunny island, Usedom is the sunniest area in Germany and the Baltic Sea with 1906 hours of sunshine a year. So the good weather guarantee comes with you on a bike tour on Usedom.

Beautiful lakes, imposing windmills and culinary delights

The seaside resorts of Usedom are ideally connected by the approximately 200 km long, well-developed network of cycle paths on the island. The cycle paths are mainly along the coast, which makes cycling here very exciting and varied.

While the northwest of the island shows almost entirely flat land, the southeastern landscape of the island is characterized by gentle hills, which is why it is also called "Usedomer Switzerland".

Usedom has numerous beautiful lakes to offer, which are always worth a detour and invite you to linger and dream. The Schmollensee and the Gothensee in the east of the island are the two largest lakes. On a bike tour around the Schmollensee you can admire several old windmills, including the Dutch windmill in Benz. It was built around 1823 and has since passed through many hands until it was bought by the German painter Otto Niemeyer-Holstein in 1974, restored and opened to the public as a technical monument. If you stop here during your tour, you can treat yourself to freshly baked cakes and fragrant coffee.

The Achterland - fascinating cottage in untouched nature

If you like smaller differences in altitude, then a trip to the backcountry should not be missing from your route. The areas of the island that face the backwaters, the Szczecin Lagoon and the Peenestrom belong to the Achterland.

Away from the sometimes somewhat hectic hustle and bustle of the Baltic coast towns, you will find real relaxation and distance from city life here in the mostly untouched and still original nature. Green forests, many lakes and rare plants and animals make this landscape an experience for every nature lover. Here you can really let your soul dangle. The many small towns with their very own charm are reminiscent of past farming and fishing settlements with their rustic fishing cottages from the 18th century.

The beautiful moated castle Mellenthin is located in the middle of the nature park on the island of Usedom and is surrounded by mighty, impressive oak trees. When you visit the castle, you will feel as if you have been transported to a fairy tale – this wonderful gem is so magical. Stroll through the idyllic castle park under old trees steeped in history. In the castle restaurant you can try the first-class, home-style cooking with fresh, regional products. If you are more in the mood for something baked, you can also treat yourself to a piece of torte or cake from the in-house castle bakery. Or you can relax with a home-brewed beer in the castle's rustic, knightly brewery.
